Default Router vs. Switch

I am getting an Airport Extreme, (although I am considering going with the time capsule for the extra $120,) and it will not have enough lan ports. it comes with 3 and I have to hook up:

2 tivos
1 xbox 360
1 wired connection for a work computer
1 desktop pc

So...can I just buy a 5 port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Network Switch as found at Tigerdirect.com for $24.99, http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...?EdpNo=2201248

hook one of the outputs from the AE to the input on the switch and then I am good to go?

You are correct.

Another question, do I need the gigabit or will a 10/100 suffice for what I am using it for? Everything has been working on an old trendnet wired router so I am thinking a gigabit is overkill for me?

thanks again

It isn't going to matter.

You connection to the internet probably isn't going to come close to any of the speeds, and Wireless protocals won't push it. Right now, the only time you may need a Gigabit switch is if you have 2 wired machines with gigabit NICs and are transferring large files.

That's a good price for gigabit though, for that price might as well get it. Impress your nerd friends.

Does the Xbox 360 have a gigabit NIC? if you do stream HD movies from computer to the xbox, and it has a gigabit NIC... i would go for the gigabit switch.

Negative on the x360 gig, Its 10/100.

Also remember that even on on a 100Mb connection, you only get about a 38mbps useful load before you start getting alot of errors etc.

And even then, depending upon the HD stream (720p vs 1080i60 vs 1080p30 vs 1080p24) and compression (mpeg2 vs mpeg4) a 100Mb connection still provides plenty of bandwidth.

Boo... PS3 has a gigabit card. Streaming the movie normally is fine, but when you want to rewind and FF, that's when it becomes an issue for me.
