Default Canada to extend Afghan mission to 2011

Quote:
OTTAWA, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Canada's parliament easily passed a government motion on Thursday to extend its Afghan mission to 2011, provided that NATO allies provide necessary reinforcement to the military operations in southern Afghanistan.

The motion passed by 198-77. The New Democratic Party and the Bloc Quebecois voted against it. The biggest opposition the Liberal Party, who had reached an agreement with the Conservatives, voted in favor.

The motion calls for Canada's 2,500 troops to stay in Afghanistan beyond its current mandate of February 2009, but with a focus on reconstruction and training of Afghan troops. It also states a clear pull-out deadline of December 2011.

But to remain in Kandahar, Canada has demanded that NATO allies provide 1,000 more troops, as well as surveillance drones, helicopters and other equipment. Otherwise, it would still withdraw next year.

Nice to see the Liberals step up and follow through with what they started.

Good, I think it was the right thing to do.

Does anyone know if the Marines that the American's promised have deployed yet?

This must have been finalized weeks ago. One of my friends joined the CF about 3 weeks ago saying he would be going to Afghanistan in June or so. He's a field engineer, which means he's right at the heart of explosives and blowing up stuff. He just loves doing that kind of stuff. That would be the last position I'd want in a Afghanistan war.

Sweetest job would have to be a fighter jet pilot. I'd have no problem going to Afghanistan if I got that job.

If your friend just joined the CF would he not have to still go though BMQ/SQ/Whatever the course is for Engineering trades is. It generally takes something like 6 months for someone to get their hook in the reg forces from what I could gather and a hell of a lot longer with the reserves.

Good on your buddy though.

He has military experience from when he was in Sweden. (I believe it was Sweden anyways) He got shot in the leg while he was there (haha). I know he's already trained in lots of heavy artillery and already knows alot of that stuff.

One of my friend's boyfriend is set to go there too, I believe he's supposed to take some sort of leadership role even though he's a 2nd Lt. He's just graduating, but its at RMC.
