hell 70% of my budget goes to my mortgage (i just did the math). i don't see too many "apartment for sex" listings in Calgary, but apart from that we can't be that much better off

It's not just France... if you go on sites like Gumtree and Craigslist you occasionally see postings like this for just about anywhere.

44% of mine goes to Mortgage.
After 1 full year of living in my own place, 52.6% of after tax income goes to home owndership related costs.
Mortgage, condo fees, property tax, 2 maid services/year (no point in owning if you dont have pride in where you live).
You could very likely add Weber BBQ, barstools and table as well as some other items which would bump those up which I would have never purchased if I rented, but those arent technically home ownershp costs so they werent included.

Approx 25% of my take home pay monthly is used to pay my mortgage.
Wife & Kids suck up the remaining.....

42% of my net income on mortgage alone. I suppose it's normal for a new condo in Calgary, but I still consider it too much. That includes condo fees and utilities though.

1 days pay covers my monthly rent.
I work 1-2 days a month.
So technically, I pay 50% of my income to rent, and about 400% of it to tuition. Luckily the wife has Mat leave or the math would quickly be the end of me.
