Vatican Adds 7 New Sins
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7287071.stm
"Those newly risking eternal punishment include drug pushers, the obscenely wealthy, and scientists who manipulate human genes. So "thou shalt not carry out morally dubious scientific experiments" or "thou shalt not pollute the earth" might one day be added to the Ten Commandments."
So litter bugs, genetic scientists and Bill Gates are now headed for a hot place. Maybe it's just me, but this kind of seems like changing the rules in mid-game. Proclamations like this make it harder than ever for me to take the Vatican seriously. Personally, I think the most meaningful thing the Vatican can do is auction off all its assets and donate the proceeds to scientific research, or the homeless, or some similar worthwhile cause.

Had an idea!
|
Who?
Can anyone even take them serious anymore?
Bill Gates is heading to hell because he did well for himself.
Great.

Bill Gates could redeem himself if all that money he donates to AIDS research and prevention in Africa was instead donated to the Catholic Church so they could continue to keep the dirty African's from using condoms!
Repent Bill! Pay down your sins!

At least they condemned themselves as well. They named pedophilia as one of the biggest modern sins.

For a totally omniscient being God sure does overlook a lot of important stuff...
You'd think he would have mentioned to Moses that he was only getting version 1.0 in the 10 commandments
Or to Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th Century AD, that he was only getting version 2.0 with the 7 deadly sins?

Here's the list for people too lazy to click on the link:
Quote:
1. “Bioethical” violations such as birth control
2. “Morally dubious” experiments such as stem cell research
3. Drug abuse
4. Polluting the environment
5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor
6. Excessive wealth
7. Creating poverty
|
Oddly enough, numbers 5 and 7 are largely caused by people who follow #1. That is to say, there'd be less poverty in the world if more people used birth control (particularly in developing countries where the Catholic Church is still a large influencing force).
And, of course, the Vatican itself is guilty as sin (pun intended) of #6.

This is what happens when you elect a hopelessly out of touch, fundamentalist, crotchety old prick as Pope, rather than a younger, more progressive one.
Everytime the Catholic Church does something like this, they drive themselves closer to oblivion.

And 5, 6 and 7 are essentially the same.
And considering alcohol is a drug, does that mean Jesus (and virtually every religous person) is a sinner?
Quote:
Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), the active ingredient in alcoholic drinks, Ethanol is a psychoactive drug, with a depressant effect, and many societies regulate or restrict its sale and consumption
|
Maybe 'Abuse' is the operative word? But since these are mortal sins the one time you do it for the pleasure or to small excess and you are abusing the drug and going to hell? It is not like a 'oh i only did it a few times' kind of thing here. This is now on par with MURDER! lol
Besides, don't ALL of these fall within the 7 deadly sins? They, by comparision, actually seemed pretty universal (almost secular) and not as religiously codified as a lot of things - like the 10 commandments.
I could have come up with a better expanded set of '7 more deadly sins' for a grade 6 religion class project! These are horrible! They don't even follow the compact and poignant format of the original 7!?

The only one that maybe belongs there is drug peddling. That ruins so many people's lives, and being a conduit to that kind of destruction is a pretty evil thing.
The rest is horse sh:t.
