Lost Mail - My Passport is missing
So I'm going to SE asia april 2nd. I sent my passport away to get a visa on Feb 22nd (I couldn't send it sooner since I was in the states). I sent it by expressed registered mail. Now when I track it the only thing on the tracking is it was recieved by canada post on Feb 22nd and there is no other information. I've called Canada post and they are looking into it, and I went to the post office I dropped it off at but they insist it is not there without even attempting to look.
My question is what do I do now? I had my passport and a money order in the package. How long should I wait before a get a new passport and try again to get a visa? Will Canada post pay for what is missing?

There is a postal ombudsman who is the official government-paid-employee-to-say-sorry-when-other-government-employees-who-never-say-sorry louse up.
Canada post loused up a change of address I sent in and I not only got an apology, I got a refund.
You have to put everything in writing, but the ombusdman's office was actually quite helpful

I sent a parcel to my brother in Minneapolis a month ago. A week later i went on line to see where the package was on their tracking system. System said it was recieved by Canada Post here in High River with no other updates. Brother phones a minute later to say he got the package. I suspect there is something wrong with the tracking system they use and your passport is somewhere in transit - not lost.

If you are shipping it to Asia, then most likely it has left Canada Posts system and is now being tracked with a different postal service. I forgot the name of the main one over there though.... Anyways, it would explain why you won't get updates.

No, he probably sent it to Montreal since that seems to be where most embassies are. It would remain in Canada for sure.

Ah okay... was just wondering. Yep, it's lost
Who knows though. I've always found Canada Posts tracking very delayed.

I agree about the tracking number. It's probably not as lost as you think it is. Some moron forgets to scan something and you're on the phone with the ombudsman!

Isn't there an embassy in the Harry Hays building?

There's one by the Chinese cultural center, but that's for China.. at least that's where my passport went to get my Chinese visa.

Having shipped with Canada Post a fair bit I have to say their tracking system is usually way out of whack. As stated before, the receiver will get the item long before Canada Post shows it on their system. Then usually a few days later the page will update telling me the details of all its travels.

Embassies are located in Capital cities, Consulates are located in cities other than the capital. Commonwealth countries use the term High Commission instead of embassy.

There are a number of consulates spread out between Edmonton and Calgary. I suspect the Chinese consulate here is the biggest; they are within their own building right on 6th ave, next to the river.

Just FYI- I hope everything is alright, and that it does not come to this, but you should be careful.
from Passport Canada: http://www.ppt.gc.ca/planification/2...®ion=Canada
Lost, stolen, damaged, destroyed or inaccessible passport
A Canadian passport is a valuable document that should be kept in a safe place at all times. Once it has been reported lost or stolen, it is no longer valid and is not to be used for any travel. This is to ensure that it is not used for fraudulent purposes. Passport Canada, Canada or any representative of the Canadian Government cannot be held responsible for any difficulties at border crossings if you attempt to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.
Reporting the loss or theft
As soon as a passport is believed to be lost or stolen, the bearer is required to report the circumstances of the loss or theft:

The passport was sent to Ottawa so it is a major center that it was sent to. I know (or I am pretty sure) it has not been delievered because the money order for the Visa has not been cashed yet. What sucks is my brother sent his passport in for his visa the same way I did and he received it back in 5 days
