Default Most Embarrassing Beer League Moments

Nicklas Backstrom's little own goal, and the priceless look on his face afterward gave me the idea for this thread--to share those moments when we think we're the stars, only to discover in a flash that we're the goat.

My most embarrassing rec league hockey moment is this: I play Center, because I'm (not to brag) very good at faceoffs. It's basically the only thing I do well, so I take a lot of pride in it, and I always have my game face on for when the puck drops.

So picture this: it's a one goal game and there's a faceoff in our own zone with just minutes left. I line up for the draw and as the ref releases the puck I lung forward and sweep the puck backward on my backhand as hard as I can.

It's not until the other team starts cheering that I realize I've launched the puck over the blocker of our goalie and right into my own net. I STILL haven't lived that one down. Needless to say, we lost that game--but far worse was the ribbing I got in the locker room over the obligatory case of PBR.

Flag football:
I intercept a pass as the safety, and with the game almost over and it being a one-point game, I try to razzle-dazzle with a lateral to a teammate - that gets intercepted by the other team. They score, and not to increase their lead as I thought - they were losing and this won the game for them.

Didn't happen to me, but another guy had his Under Armour shorts ripped off while going commando.

I got crushed by a girl once in a mixed hockey game. Elbow and all. I went down like a sack of potatoes.

A friend crushed Peter Nedved into the boards in a summer pick-up game at the Oval. Peter was not impressed.

Wearing shorts with the waist too big... ran for a pop-fly and my shorts nearly fell down, and to hold them up at the same time as playing... not ideal.

slow-pitch...we were ahead by one in the last inning with the bases loaded, 2 out guy hits a one hopper back to the mound and I barehand it and flip it underhand for the easy out and the win...only thing is I flip it to the shortstop, not covering second tieing run scores next batter up crushes one out of the park and we lose

not to be out done by me missing a base, the other team catching it, having to turn back to tag, slipping in a mud hole and being tagged out

haha reminds me of ball hockey running down the wall and a girl on the opposite team (plays for the womens pronghorn team) throws a viscious hip check and sends me ass over tea kettle onto the floor

Playing our regular hack and slash hockey, we are officially "non-contact", but a few of us that are good friends have a little fun with laying the odd hit.

We have one guy who sometimes takes the hitting a little too far. No big deal; what goes around comes around, right? Well, one game I see him. He's got his head down and I know I can give him a good solid shoulder and send him flying. I'm skating, skating, and just as I commit to the hit, he sees me at the last second and gets out of the way. I realize I'm about to miss and hit the ice, when I suddenly notice another one of my teammates was doeng the exact same thing to him from the other side. Neither of us can stop in time and we have the biggest collision of the season.

Worst part of it was that it happened when we were renting the ice at the Saddledome, so it was captured on several camcorders so that every so often I can be reminded of the play.

This one is easy. (Although it's not rec. league.)

Junior hockey. Playoffs. Game 3 of 3. I'm a goalie.

We're on the PP late in the 3rd, down by 2 IIRC. Their guy dumps it out of their zone with a slap shot. The puck hits the boards at about the centre line, and comes right for me. I have a winger curling anticipating the pass.

I go out to play the puck, and completely woof it. Goes right in the net. The groans from the stands of everyone watching. Good god.

That was how I ended my last game in junior hockey. I didn't get kicked off the team or anything, it was the end of the season and I was moving.

It still haunts me to this day. My puck handling skills suck rabid donkey balls. I've always contested it's because I shoot right, and as a goalie, I have to shoot with my left. It's my excuse, leave me alone.

The first time I played slo-pitch was as a last minute sub for a friend's team. They told me once, twice and thrice NOT to step on home plate, should I round the bases.
Sure as shiz, I find myself on 3rd base in the 9th, we're down 1 run and there are 2 out.
I get batted in and even though people are yelling at me to not step on home plate, it somehow doesn't register and I gloriously stomp the plate while cheering. So instead of tying the game, I lost it.

That was a bit embarrassing.

Not really embarrassing, but a story.

Some buddies and I registered in a university sponsored road hockey tournament last fall. The night before we all drank far beyond an acceptable amount of alcohol. Our first game was at 9 am that morning, and after about a min into it, the first whistle went. We called a time out, and in a perfect line walked over to the boards, puked, and then turned around to keep playing. All 5 of us. It was hilarious. We lost the first game but went on to win the tournament that afternoon.

I got high sticked by a guy so I turned to punch the guy in the face and I pop my shoulder out. Nice punch, loser. Thankfully, the guy wanted no part of it and skated off or I would have been screwed.

I don't really have one of me, however I got one for my teammate.
It was like his second game ever and he forgot his pants.
Now this is roller hockey so we wear cooperalls. So he still had all the gear just not the track pants.
He played. We just told him to stand in front of their goalie and eat some beans.

Why can't you step on home plate?

At a slow pitch tournament in BenAlto (I think), sponsored by an Oil Field supply company - their concession was selling 25 cent draft all weekend. Teams brought out hot tubs. There was a champagne and orange juice breakfast... and we had the 8:00 a.m. draw on diamond #1 Saturday morning, which had some slobbering drunk do play by play on the P.A. On my first at bat, I actually burnt the LF and hit it to the fence, right down the line, but I was so pissed, I tripped over my own feet I tripped, rolled, and then slid on my face through the shale. Stunned, bleeding, and full of road rash, I crawled to first, turning a perfectly good triple into a single. I didn't really hear it, but I am told the play by play guy had a field day with me.

The bat-catcher has to stand on home plate. There isn't a tag play at home instead a case of whether the bat-catcher catches the ball before the runner crosses the home plate line.

It's basically done to avoid unnecessary collisions.

Ha ha, that happened to me too. First year bantam and this one girl who was playing in our league went to the same school as me and everything. She was a vicious player though as she always took the initiative to cross check you any chance she got. She actually played for Team B.C. at the Canada Winter games and I think wasn't too far off of making team Canada back in the mid 90's.

First game I'm playing against her and I'm going off for a line change and she runs me from behind into the edge of the boards as the gate was open and I had one foot on the bench and one on the ice and knocked the wind right out of me. Frick I wasn't even close to the puck how was I supposed to see it coming. I got up and right away to see who did it and lo and behold it's the girl....I had to pull down my stick that I was about to use to take off this person's head and yell out some obscenity. I was harassed for the rest of the year for that one about being run over by a girl. For the next two seasons she would cheap shot me at will, I had marks down my side from all her cross checks where I had no padding.

Finally last game of the regular season and I was pushed over the edge and had enough. By than too....I'm now 5'9 instead of 5'-3 like I was a year and half earlier....She cuts accross the blue line and I come from accross the ice and put the shoulder into her head and absolutely crush her with a good clean hit knocking her silly.....Of course than the whole rink yells at me for hitting a girl and I have to fight off 3 of their players while no one on my team jumps in for me. I'm given a 5 minute major as the only penalty. Just can't win in that type of situation, they can run you and do whatever it's fair game. You try to get them back and you're the most evil jerk ever. I'm going off the ice saying, christ she's had it coming for two years, but to no sympathy.

Not beer league ... minor hockey city champs actually.

2-2 in the one-game final with a couple of minutes left. I get the puck behind my net and go to pass it out ... right in front, to the other team, and they score.

And win.

God that was awful as a kid. Lead the team in scoring next year though! Woo.
