Default Harper and Tories are against Tax Cuts Now?

The federal Liberals pass a tax cut through the House of Commons while Harper is dealing with "financial considerations" he offered Mr. Cadman and now the Tories are against tax cuts. Interesting strategy.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl.../National/home

"The Harper government vowed Thursday to kill legislation introduced by a Liberal MP and quietly passed by the House of Commons that would allow parents to contribute up to $5,000 a year to their children's education and deduct it from their income tax."

“We will do everything in our power to stop this bill from progressing further as it represents a flagrant abuse by the Liberals of the use of private members business in order to spend taxpayers' money,” said Chisholm Pothier, spokesman for Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

I always knew the Conservatives were against education, but tax cuts as well? Colour me confused...

Not only that, but with a $15 billlion surplus, this isn't exactly going to kill the budget. I think this is actually a great motion by the Liberals.

That is a lot of money, not saying it shouldn't be done, but the conservatives have their own plan for how to spend the tax dollars. Maybe they have another idea which they wouldn't be able to do if this were to pass.

Not to mention, I think there are better ways that would help students out than give parents a tax credit.

Not to mention, they can't just agree with any tax cut. Can you imagine if the Libs tried to introduce a tax cut of like 5%.

Your right, they want to spend how they see fit not dictated by the libs.

Christ Eddy, could you have been any more biassed in your post?

Why didn't you just title the thread "I hate the Conservative Party" and left it at that?

But if a Liberal policy is a tax cut, that is still a tax cut no?

But fine it is spin. What Flaherty is really up in arms about is that he had his little 5000 a year tax savings account which basically helps only those making enough money that they have maximized their 20,000 dollar contribution to RRSP's. Now there is another RRSP style tax saving that helps out the middle class. If you are making 60,000 dollars a year, work hard and play by the rules the Liberals are willing to give you a break. They know you have 2 kids who you would love to see be able to go to college. And they are willing to help you out with that endeavor.

How any party can be against a tax cut that will be used to better educate Canadians and thus have a better educated populace is beyond me.

Oh, so no matter how good a policy is, if it's proposed by the Liberals the Conservatives feel compelled to kill it?

Boy, I could see why a left-leaning person would want to spin that, as it sounds so acceptable and mature when spelled straight out.

So if the libs introduced a motion so that all students don't pay income tax, the Conservatives should just accept it because it would be good for students?

Doesnt matter who has the minority goverment - the grits or the tories, if the opposition party tries to push their policy, than the minority goverment will squash it.

its just stupid politics.
liberals scream and cry about the some of the bills the tories push and instead of voting against it, they just dont show up, which basically saying otherwise, (if you want to spin it)....same would be true if the the grits where in power.

The conservatives want to push their policies, they are the ruling goverment, no different than if the NDP or the Libs were in power....

Doesnt matter if you are left or right, it would still be the case of the roles were reversed...

Perhaps, I like to believe that it is because this is a tax cut that would help out the middle class. Virtually every tax cut this Tory government has come up with has benefitted the upper income earners in Canada. Now a tax cut comes along that benefits the middle class and they are against it?

Hopefully the Tories decide to make it a confidence motion and the Libs let the government fall over it. It would be nice for the government to fall because the Tories are against a tax cut for education purposes.

How, pray tell, does this tax cut help out those with no kids, or with grown kids? This is a tax cut that helps out one individual group. A group, I might add, that is not confined to the "middle class".

I'm not saying it's a bad idea overall, but your blatant attempts to grossly misrepresent the facts are pretty weak.

Also, from my experience, a lot of middle class families dont have $5000 a year to spend on their childrens education. Don't most students that require student loans come from middle to lower income families. In fact, this would probably benifit the rich the most.

Indeed. How utterly ironic, eh?

And obviously, the Liberal plan does nothing for poor families who have to choose between food and saving for their kids futures. Why do the Liberals hate the poor?

RESP's benefit everyone, you can be 54 years old and start an RESP for yourself.

http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/hip/lld/ce..._General.shtml

As for the argument between food and education, that would apply if you were speaking about the ridiculousness of a GST cut. But we are talking about changing RESP from being after tax dollars to tax free dollars. This would undoubtedly lower the threshold that an individual would be able to start contributing to an RESP.

You should read what an RESP is Resolute before commenting on the implications of what group it helps.

Sounds like a Conservative vs Liberal policy thing to me. The Conservatives have created a budget based around expected tax revenue, while the Liberals are trying to get their own policies implemented. If too many take advantage of it, that expected tax revenue could be gone in a hurry.

Good to see the Liberals helping those people with children that can afford to put $5000 into a RESP. Now, how about the rest of us, hmmm? /sarcasm

RESP's can be contributed to for a 22 year period. 50,000 is the max that you can contribute to an RESP. So it is more like "great to see the Liberals helping those people with or without children that can afford to put 2,272 dollars a year into an RESP for 22 years"

I have no idea why anyone thinks this is a tax cut for children, it is a tax cut for education. Anyone can set up an RESP at anytime, as long as they have a SIN number.
