The Oscars Thread
Anyone going to watch this tonight? I usually just tune into the last bit to see who wins all the big awards (best picture, best actor, etc). I am a pretty big film fan though and I've seen almost all the nominated films so I do enjoy guessing at the results.
My guesses for this year
Best Picture: No Country for Old Men
Best Director: Coen Brothers
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis
Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem (although I was a big fan of Hal Holbrooks's performance)
Best Actress: Cate Blanchett
Best Supporting Actress: Tilda Swinton
Best Animated Film: Persepolis
Best Documentary: Sicko
Best Cinematography: Atonement
Best Visual Effects: Transformers

Would like to see No Country win Best Picture, and Amy Ryan win Best Supporting Actress. Other than that, I don't have much preference. I've only seen 2/5 Best Picture nominees this year.

I hate the Oscars. I hope they all have to be on set in some back country location with no showers tomorrow at 630 AM.

Y'know what they should do - they should just film a two hour original movie created and starring the winners of the oscars. So you find out who won while watching something that's actually good. Well, maybe good.
I hate speeches.

My girlfriend watches the Oscars religiously. Thank god I put a bigger T.V. in my office.

I pvr'd it. So much better to fast forward to parts you want to see and then skip the rest of the crap. You can get the whole thing down to a managable time, although we've now caught up to real time......

Amen brother!
Was anyone else pumped about who won best original song? That movie (and song for that matter) is incredible.

I was pumped up when I saw that redhead dancing during the last performance...turns out it was Amy Adams.

No Country for Old Men with the big night. I honestly thought it would be "There Will Be Blood" taking the big one. Oh well, the Coen brothers made a really good flick about a crazy dude looking for revenge.

i came in here to say the exact same thing. started recording, watched an episode of Terminator, then caught up just as it was ending. i actually enjoy the Oscars when i can skip the commercials, songs, tributes, "who cares" awards, and the dreaded acceptance speeches. good to see No Country clean up, awesome film (though i still think 3:10 To Yuma should have been nominated for best film, and Christian Bale for best actor)
really though i enjoyed Jon Stewart more than the Oscars itself, he had some good stuff tonight. and with his own team of writers working with him on it, it had a little Daily Show flavor to it

Chalk up another one who pvr'ed it, and found it pretty enjoyable. Jon Stewart is a fantastic host and really kept things loose. For the most part the awards were right on. Thought There Will Be Blood deserved it over Old Country for Old men, but both were fantastic movies.
I actually just watched Michael Clayton last night and really enjoyed it. Tom Wilksonson was great but Haviar Barden was just brilliant in an apparent "supporting" role in No Country.
Still haven't seen Atonement, will get around to it at a much, much later date. Just doesn't seem like a movie I want to hurry out and see.

Two guys I felt deserved a nomination were Ben Foster in 3:10 to Yuma and Paul Dano in There Will Be Blood, but that category was already stacked.

2 of the past 3 years as host and i get the feeling that he'll get the call a few more times in the future. screw Billy Crystal, Stewart is the best host the Oscars have ever had. he was the only reason i even bothered to watch it tonight, from hearing him mention it on The Daily Show last week
it'd be awesome if they could get him and Colbert to do a co-hosting type thing, i never fail to be amused when they're both on screen at the same time

anyone notice how short the awards were this year???? 3 hours 15 minutes....I'm pretty sure that's well below average.

I know I am in the minority on CP with on this but I thought that No Country was pretty average at best with a number of boring periods.
I really don't get all the hype around it.
I haven't seen any of the others movies to comment on them but I certainly would hope that one of them were better than No Country. There certainly were a ton of other movies that I have seen that were much better.

saw No Country this afternoon, wanted to catch it before the Oscars. I loved it, Bardem ruled, what a performance. One of the very few times I've walked out of the theatre knowing I saw something special. Now I need to get my ass out there and see some of the others.

I was going to say the same thing. No country was a dumb, boring, pretentious and pseudo intellectual movie, with so many plot holes (the dude going back to the crime scene I mean come on? Did he expect that Mexiac dude to be still alive? And just minutes laters he outruns a pick up truck, during night ???) and illogical and downright stupid stuff (police officers get killed, crazy psycho walks around killing people with that stupid cattle gun, shotguns fired on the street and no cops/feds are to be seen anywhere, etc). Not to mention it had no end to speak of (unless you think the "evil always wins" was the ending).
For overrated Coen brothers, apparently it is more important to pretend their movie has a meaning rather than actually make sure it has a meaning. Imbecile mumbling of sheriff consitutes "a struggle of an old man with new times he cannot cope with anymore"?
One of the most overrated movie of the last decade.
Not surprised Hollywood and the critis love it though.
