In my experience, they're not going to be worth very much unless there's a really valuable diamond or other jewel involved. My sister in law came up with a good idea when she found out how little her unwanted wedding and engagement ring were worth ... she had them melted down and made into a nice broach. However, if your friend doesn't want anything to do with them because of bad memories, she might need to be prepared to take a pitance for them. All I got for my wedding ring from my first marriage was $20. It wasn't anything special, but it retailed around $300 as I recall. Those prices are from about 20 years ago, so it went from $300 retail to worth only $20 as salvage in the mid-1980s.
Edit: I sold mine to a goldsmith ... can't remember the name. Some jewelers will buy them too, but not all of them as I recall. It seems to me the goldsmith was the best place at the time.

Maybe try the place where the rings were purchased or else start hitting up various jewellery stores? In any case you will never get the full value of something like a ring. Selling on ebay, craigslist or the Buy and Sell forum will probably be more of a headache.

Like Ford Perfect said, it won't be worth much. I was offered jack squat for mine, so I brought it with me, along with a watch the whore gave to me on our wedding day, on a trip to Calgary. I threw them both into the lake at our cottage near Invermere. Very satisfying.

My father is a goldsmith and I worked in his store for over 10 years. Basically, she is only going to get the wholesale cost of bulk gold, plus the wholesale cost of the stones. The gold will usually go for around $10 per gram. A normal sized ladies wedding ring is 3 - 6 grams. In other words....squat. The only real value is the diamonds. Even those, however, aren't going to be worth anything close to what the purchase price was. Most jewellery stores have a 300% markup on diamonds, so do the quick math.
If it's the money she wants, your best bet is to use Ebay or something like it. If she wants to get rid of the memories ASAP, sell it to a real jewellery store. Not a store in the mall or a big chain.
As stated above, however, the best value is to melt it down into something else. Most places will do this for very affordable prices. Under $200.

It's probably a personal story and he doesn't need to tell it if he doesn't feel like it.

depending on the stone, you might actually be able to sell it to someone on eBay, some people are not superstitious and won't mind the "negative energy" a ring from a broken marriage would bring, provided that the price is right, of course.

eBay is about what she has decided on too.
For her, it is a symbolic gesture more than anything though. Sell her wedding rings to pay for her divorce. Everything comes full circle.

Here is an idea, my mom and dad got divorced when I was little and both my parents mean a lot to me. A while back my mom gave me the engagement ring that my dad had given to her. Of course it didn't have sentimental value to her but to me it had huge value. The ring was kind of outdated so I took the main stone and used it in my wife's engagment ring. She loved the ring and the sentiment behind it. Not sure if this would apply but just a suggestion

I am embarassed to tell that my friends dog ate my sons poop that he laid on the deck last night, but I will take one for the team.

My dog ate one of my g/f's diamond earrings once, and I spent a week sifting through his stool looking for it.
That's love, man.
