Default Britain proposes new guidelines for immigration

The British proposals are still under consultation and must be approved by Parliament.

"For newcomers to Britain, the prized asset of citizenship must be earned," said Gordon Brown, the British Prime Minister.

"We must ensure that British citizenship is a set of obligations as well as a guarantee of rights."

No, there is no probation period like the one proposed in Britian. One has to be a Permanent Resident of Canada for three years and then apply for citizenship. They must pass a test but there are so many ways around it there is no point in having the test.

Like I have been saying many times on this website, Britian is in a crisis and this is only the beginning of changes that will be implemented.

I just ask because I am helping a Burmese refugee family acclimatize into the city. We have some friends who volunteer for the Catholic Immigration Service and they said that the Canadian government has them on a learning curve for about a year where they have to learn English and do stuff in their community.

The de facto waiting period for Canadian citizenship is 3 years + ~16 months. Yes, you have to have lived in Canada as a permanent resident for 3 years, but the citizenship application process takes it to over 4 years.

Our federal government has many initiatives which help immigrants to integrate faster. Peter12's friends are part of the Host Program, but that one is only available to refugees. English training (LINC) is available to all immigrants in initial stages of settlement. Those are only two of the federal programs, not to mention all the provincial ones.

Canada is definitely doing many things right when it comes to immigrants because we actually need them. Unless you guys want to get busy in your bedrooms without birth control, ensuring a healthy population growth will have to be done through immigration.

Also, if the immigrant was working in Canada prior to becoming a Permanent Resident they can use up to 1.5 years of that time toward there wait to apply for citizenship.
