I missed the boat on this one by a bit, I thought there would be a chance, but I also thought that the next CDS would represent the Navy or more importantly the Airforce. Both from a political standpoint of showing equal ownership in a integrated military, and from the fact that the Lionshare of the funding under Hillier went to upgrading the Army. Frankly the Airforce did get some stuff, including the new heavy lift aircraft, however the continuing helicopter struggles, and the fact that the F-18's need to be upgraded pointed to me that an airforce officer would have been appointed next. The Navy would have had a strong candidate as well, and they need some priorities in terms of command and control or task force command ships, and heavy sea lift capabilities, and again helicopters for our frigates.
One thing is clear, the new chief of defense staff is following in my mind the best chief of defense staff that Canada has ever had, he's got big shoes to fill.
