CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
At approximately 18:45 this evening, The Calgary Fire
Department responded to a building fire at the 1400 block of
17th Avenue S.W. The first arriving fire crews reported thick
grey smoke coming from the building and initiated a second
alarm immediately. Firefighters had to force their way
through high security mechanisms on the doors and windows to
gain entry into the structure. Once inside, they reported
that the building was fully involved and smoke and flames
were quite significant. A total of four separate businesses
were a part of the total structure. In order from west to
east, included:
* Westside Mountain Shop, Phyne Fashions inc.,(both had
significant damage),
* a small pub called 17 Avenue Lounge (little visible damage)
* McDonalds restaurant (no damage)(citizens evacuated and
restaurant closed for the evening)
The fire has been deemed "under control" but firefighters are
still dousing hot spots. Due to the structural instability of
the building, fire investigators will commence their
investigation tomorrow during daylight. A fire watch will be
maintained throughout the evening and Fire Command will
request that Calgary Police maintain security on the
structure until tomorrow. Approximately fifteen pieces of
fire apparatus and approximately thirty four firefighters
responded to the incident. No injuries were reported at this
time and Calgary Police will maintain street closures until
the incident has been concluded.
