Default 2 Deals Hit Minny

After a number of weeks of inactivity, GM Grant took advantage of a rare evening off to pull of two deals.

The first sees Bryan McCabe leave the organization for Tampa in exchange for two former members of the Wild: Nik Kronwall and TJ Oshie.

The second sees Mike Peca and Zach Hamil head to Montreal for Sergei Federov.

Grant had this to say

"Well first Nik is a great dman who finally realized his potential. He was in our organization for about 3 years so we know him well. TJ was originally signed by the Wild and is a kid we have high expectations for and could see in the CPHL within the year. That deal improves our cap situation for next season which is improtant for us given the challenges we will have.

The second deal brings us an experience proven vet - and most importantly a guy that we can move back to the blueline if need be. That flexibility was probably the most important reason for pulling the trigger on the trade".

Farhall added the team is looking to add at least one more third/fourth liner and depth dman before the trade deadline.

The Habs made a difficult trade tonight, but one we felt was necessary. Federov, our current #1 centre, was moved for Peca and Hamill. It was difficult to part with Federov, but the reality is we are 7 points back of a playoff spot and there are 5 teams ahead of us.

In return, we were able to pick up a couple of important pieces. Peca is signed to a decent contract and is having a good year so his re-rate should be alright.

The more important piece was adding Zach Hamill. The prospect cupboard in Montreal was pretty bare, so Hamill adds a much needed high-end prospect.

Thanks Grant for the trade talks, it was easy and straightforward.

The MTL-MIN deal works well for both sides. The Wild add a vet who can play D and F and who should play an important role in a playoff run. MTL gets a defensive forward and fairly solid prospect for a UFA who might even retire. I think it fits the direction of both teams.
