At least 18 Dead in US Tornadoes - edit - 48 Dead
As per CNN.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/weather/0...her/index.html
I'm kinda put off that they mention election related news in an article about storms killing that many people.

I sure wish we could get some of that New Mexico snow here in Dallas.
I need a day off.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this a little early in the year for tornados?

Nope. Not in the area that was hit.
Not prime tornado season, but it is not rare.

New Mexico has a very, very high average elevation and is not a stranger to heavy snows in most locales. Not saying this isn't a significant event or anything, just that it's not odd.

Toll now at 52. Will end up being one of the deadliest breakouts in US history at this point.

Doesn't seem likely given the number of tornados the US has seen with 100+ fatalities in the past.

Let's just say I can't remember the last time we had 52 fatalities in one outrbreak.
I remember April 26, 1991 here in Wichita where we had 27 or so fatalities and that seemed unfathomable.
An entire town was destroyed this May and we had 8 fatalities that day.
I guess 52 wouldn't be in the top 10, but when you are talking about thousands of events over a period of 150 years or so (judging by some of the dates on that list) it would seem quite a ways up the list.
