Default Sholdice Football Park-We need Calgarypuck's help!

Hi all,

I hope you all don't mind helping amateur football here in our town. The Sholdice park is a plan to build three artifical turf fields for amateur sport in the city. The funding is in place and they are ready to go. The issue is ONE person from the community is threatening to de-rail the whole project.

If you feel so inclined please e-mail bonnie.hilford@calgary.ca the following letter of support.

THANK YOU!

Re: Appeal Number: 2009-0077 - Development Permit Number: DP2008-3293

Dear Board,

This letter is provided to indicate the writer’s strong opposition to the postponement of the hearing scheduled for April 9, 2009 with respect to the Subdivision & Development Appeal Board Appeal Number: 2009-0077 - Development Permit Number: DP2008-3293 regarding the Greater Calgary Amateur Football Association initiative to build 3 artificial turf fields at Shouldice Athletic Park.

The undersigned is IN OPPOSITION TO any postponement of the hearing and the granting of any appeal based on the following points of public interest:

1. There is a need for this project to proceed expeditiously because any delays will jeopardize the completion of the fields prior to the start of the 2009 amateur season.
2. The lack of any artificial turf fields in Calgary increases the risk of injury to our amateur athletes and is inefficient based on the following:
(a) Artificial fields can be used for extended periods as there is no damage to the grass, less maintenance, and reduced frost delays;
(b) The playing season is also extended from snow melt to late fall; and
(c) The turf surface has been proven to be more forgiving than natural turf, especially during cold periods, which reduces the risk of injury to the players.
3. The increased time of available use also means the City can enjoy increased revenues and proportionately reduce per-user fees.
4. Amateur football in Calgary has been steadily growing over the past number of years and it is the best interest of the City to support and encourage its responsible development as a way of increasing the level of physical activity ion our children and developing team-driven attitudes in our young people.
5. The City of Calgary has fallen considerably behind other Western city centers that already have turf fields for their amateur athletes. (Edmonton, Leduc, Regina, Saskatoon etc..)
Thank you in advance for your support of amateur football in Calgary.
Sincerely,

What arguments is the person making against the project?

The complaint is that it will cause traffic problems and infringe on the Bow. The funny thing is we only want to turf the fields and update the stands. there is already four fields built there now. Even if you don't live in the city please feel free to express your support for this worthwhile project.

here is some reading for all..

This is interesting. So is the MCA opposed to it? I coach community soccer for the MCA and know both heads of the MCA quite well. My Father is very high up on the MCA board and I havnt heard much about this. The last MCA meeting I attended everyone seemed like they really wanted the turf. It is very clear they need to do something about parking there because at the moment it is just awful to accomodate all the people, players, volunteers, and workers.

Football (high school, midget, bantam, and pee wee) has become very popular within the past 4-5 years and they need to work on the parking if they are going to have this facility.

Sigh.... I was really hoping this would be ready for the fall season, as a ref I always hated showing up and then having the city cancel games because of a little rain. Hopefully the city tells this person to shove it.

I am hoping that there will not be a delay but we do need to show the city that this is important. This will be a great facility and if you get a chance check out the midget football league this season. A great brand of footballl...

My brother is on one of the midget teams so I will be to everyone of his games. I hope this facility will be open before high school football starts again.

As a coach, I hated it even more when you spent all week preparing for the game, only to have it cancelled by a little rain. Football is made to be played in the rain. I can't believe someone is trying to stop this.

My letter is sent.
