Default A word of warning for newish GMs

When you are negotiating a deal with a rival GM and they ask for cash for next season - watch yourself.

Many a team have been crippled by trading away too much cash for following seasons.

As a rule of thumb I have no problem including cash to equal out salaries in the current season. But I never, EVER trade cash for next season. My view is that it's the other GMs job to manage their cap for next season.

With the cost of re-signing your own UFAs very high in our league, trading away cap for next season is arguably the most valuable asset in any deal. Veteran GMs will be smart and ask for it - because in some ways it feels like a "throw in".

So...consider this a cautionary note about it.

Jackets have not traded a dime of next years cap yet. We're hopeful that having around 30 million dollars to spend on upgrading players will make us look somewhat like a hockey team next year. Probably won't help us a lick though until we figure out who good hockey players actually are.

Since I feel slightly targetted as this thread was started right after my trade...I traded him the money he'd already traded to me back and already have over 1 million acquired for next year...I think it's all up to people's flexibility, it is an asset just like trading picks from a few years off

Yours was just one of a few recent trades involving cap of late. And almost all of them involve relatively new GMs.

Heck - GMs can do what they want. I just want to make sure the possibly dire consequences were well known.

In the past I have deals fall through because I wouldn't trade cap for the following season. I didn't believe in it when I was in the league, and when I return I still won't move future cap.

Well, I have to stick up for Dan here as I think in some deals, like ours, it is a must. There's just no way our deal would have worked without it as Kariya will be a UFA at seasons end and by July 1st, this deal would have looked like Hemsky and Horcoff for a declining Cheechoo...that could be considered one of the worst deals ever! With the cash, he still saves money next season AND the year after on the contracts and it gives me a better shot at re-signing Kariya so I don't totally lose on this one. I don't see why that would be a problem.

I don't think there's a specific universal problem with it, but I DO think that it's something I will always vehemently resist doing. Cap for this year is worth like 1/100th what cap for the next season is worth ...
