Default DNA testing coming to Canada

Is this a service you would use? Would you want to know if you had a gene that would eventually kill you? Would having a defective gene stop you from having children in the future even if there was only a remote chance you could pass it on?

Nope. Don't care. If I die tomorrow, so be it. I don't want to die tomorrow, but if I did, I wouldn't be thinking, "man I should have taken that DNA test and maybe I could have prevented it."

Half assed looks like a scam. You send them a grand, they send you a cup to spit in, then they post their findings on their website?

Lemme guess: You have a 48% chance of getting cancer, 22% chance of diabetes, 100% chance of dying eventually...

Very similar to what a lot of people find out from a routine MRI as well. Suddenly they find new stuff they never knew they had and now they have a conundrum, should I get this fixed, or will things stay the same?

I'd be interested in this more from a geneological point rather than to know about whether I have a disposition to certain health defects. Where they'll take a swab of your cheek and tell you about your ancestors and what not from around the globe. That'd be awesome.

I don't think I want to know if I'm going to get heart disease someday.

I would like to find out all about my genes so that I could change my lifestyle. If I am pre-disposed to some sort of illness, I would want to take steps to avoid that, if I knew for sure it was coming.

And to address the counterpoint before you guys bring it up (ie/ why don't you just behave healthily now?) Because is it fun to eat only healthy, to not drink too much, to walk everywhere, etc. No. So I don't want to do it if I don't have to.

So yeah this would be sweet.

I'm waiting for the day that technological surveillance and biological and dna data will be everywhere. Then I'll know who keyed my car that one day. Jerk.
