Strange bump on my gums
Hello CP, today I'm going to ask for the knowledge of the all-knowing power that is CP.
I got my wisdom teeth surgically removed way back in June. This morning when I woke up, the lower right portion of my gum where a wisdom tooth was removed was swollen. It kind of looks like a pinky finger pushing up against the gum from underneath.
I can't get into my dentist or doctor today, and I'm kind of worried it might be infection or something.
Or maybe I'm worrying for nothing.
Anyone have any advice, or know what it might be?

Herpes?
j/k
Sounds like a small infection. Mouth pain often feels worse than it is, so many nerve endings there. But I don't imagine it's going to be a huge problem health wise over 24-48 hours before you can get it looked at.

Haha I should have known that the herpes jokes would start.. considering getting herpes requires doing certain things I think I'm safe
Any other ideas as to what it is?

The bumps to which you refer are known as "mandibular tori", and are considered a variant of normal oral anatomy. You can read more about them here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torus_mandibularis
The extrusion of a sharp piece of material from one of your tori is more difficult to identify, and you will need to have your dentist assess the situation in person.
Although these bony prominences are vulnerable to scratching and other injury, there is the possibility of a more significant problem in the underlying bone-- perhaps an infection, which should be properly examined.

Sorta had something similar but it happened much sooner then what you describe. I had a bump forming in the socket were the tooth was pulled from. Kept pushing upwards until it broke the skin and I pulled it out. Turned out to be a small piece of tooth that got healed over and I guess during the healing process, it eventually got pushed out.

I've heard of this, except yeah I did think it would happen sooner if it was going to happen to me. But I guess anything is possible; it seems like the most likely explanation as I've never had problems before.

Having taken Dental Assisting, there's so many things that it could possibly be... none of them requiring emergency care I think (as long as there are no open lesions). Just make an appointment with your dentist and get it checked out when you can and try not to aggravate it with your tongue in the meantime.

That's the hard part, my tongue seems to automatically go there. I don't think it's an open lesion, it seems like the gum might be coming away from the back of my last tooth a bit.
My friend told me today that her sister has 6 wisdom teeth. Maybe I have a random 5th trying to come in?

That's possible. I had 7. Really awful when they try to grow in sideways or something. One of them came through the same place from which the previous one was removed.

The bump is pretty hard and doesn't hurt too much when I press it. I don't know if that's what a tooth coming in feels like as my 4 wisdom teeth were impacted and never came down.

I know it's hard... like trying not to pick at a scab...
The extra wisdom tooth thing is a possibility, but like I said it's one of many things that it could be...
If the gum is coming away from the tooth (receding?) sometimes it helps if you massage it up. From the bottom of your gums to the top of the tooth... like you're trying to push it back into place. But use gentle strokes.
AND GO SEE YOUR DENTIST!!!!!

Well I got in this morning and she took an x-ray. There was no bone chip or anything so she figures it's an inflammation from plaque or other stuff getting behind my tooth and making my gums swell. She said it's not infected but just inflamed. Now I have to rinse it out with salt water for a week and go back if it doesn't improve.

Well, that's a hell of a lot better than it could have been. Much rather deal with salt water for a week than most things the dentists can throw at you.
