Default Guzoo & Discovery Animal Farms

Has anyone ever been to either? I see the signs whenever I drive North and always meant to check them out but never have.

Anyways, I get an email from WPSA which is usually about something happening in Asia or Africa but this time I was a bit suprised, the email is about these 2 farms.

"more than 150 violations of Alberta's zoo standards at two roadside zoos – Guzoo Animal Farm (Three Hills) and Discovery Wildlife Park (Innisfail). The government seems to be turning a blind eye to these animal welfare and public safety concerns."

150 violations sounds pretty bad. What are those places like?

We went to the Discovery Wildlife Park almost two years ago and I was pretty disgusted by some of the cage set-ups they had. They had some monkeys in cages that seemed way too cramped and the large animal pens had culverts as shelters and not much else in the way of terrain. It didn't seem attrocious or anything but if you've been to the Calgary Zoo and then go to this place it's differences are huge.

I grew up in Three Hills and know the family that run Guzoo. Compared to what it once was it's vastly improved, there are a lot of things I know they would like to still improve but money is a issue as with anyone else. The owner genuinely cares for the animals too, but I can see a lot of the points that the WSPA brings up and agree with them but, I know they find things wrong at normal zoo too.

Guzoo is a roadside prairie zoo located in Threehills, Alberta. In this zoo, exotic animals are kept in horrible conditions, often have no food or water. They have no shelter from the freezing and hot weather and some social animals live alone. ALl the cages are far to small, and have no enrichment.

Here is an article written on the Guzoo explaining much about the harrassment they are under from Animal Rights Activists.

I went to Gazoo a few years ago. It didn't seem to safe or clean but it had some neat animals. My then girlfriend walked around with a baby lion in her arms for about 45 minutes, it was just roaming around.
