Default People: You must slow down to 60kph

Does everyone know that they must slow down to 60kph when they are passing an emergency vehicle with the lights activated and you are in the lane directly next to the emergency vehicle?

If you don't know or you don't slow down.....SLOW DOWN.

Also, if you are in the 2nd and 3rd lane over, NOT the one next to it, you DO NOT have to slow down to 60km/hr! Be cautious and be ready, but don't cause everyone else to jam on their brakes!

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

I can't believe there is a problem with people slowing down when passing emergency vehicles. In my experience people start craning their neck even if it's just a pullover/ticket.
The red and blue lights just seem to captivate calgary drivers the way oprah captivates flamesdyehard.

Wow, no offense, but if you are passing emergency vehicles that have their lights going, you are going WAY TOO FAST. You are supposed to get out of the way, not go faster than them.

I assume he means ones that have stopped on the side of the road or something....

LOL...

But I've got places to be. If I speed up I'll get past everybody rather than caught in the ridiculous traffic that emergency vehicles tend to create.

For safety reasons, I slow down to 60 no matter what lane I'm in. Just because I'm 15 feet away instead of 5 doesn't mean that driving 110 is ok.

It's probably one of the major reasons traffic stops are some of the most dangerous things police do.

I would take far more interest in Oprah than any Cop car.

Although it must be said, a Cop Car and Oprah would have virtually identical reactions to you skewering them with your tube steak.

Haha, sorry should have clarified but I guess it applies both to stopped emergency vehicles and moving ones I guess.

Yes it does mean that driving 110 is ok, because that's the law. If you feel the need to slow down move into the lane directly next to the emergency vehicle. To impede traffic can be just as ignorant and dangerous as speeding.

I am using QEII as an example.

Yeah, this is even worse. Or, if you're going in the opposite direction as the emergency vehicles, especially if there's a median between you, you don't have to slow down either.

Being a cautious driver is good, but being overly cautious, can be just as dangerous as being reckless.

The situation I'm never sure about is when you come around a corner on Deerfoot doing 100 and there's an emergency vehicle ahead a short distance and the only way you could possibly get down to 60 in time would be to slam on your brakes (forcing everyone behind you to slam on their brakes). In that situation, I usually back off the accelerator and try to get into the next lane if possible, but sometimes you have no choice but to pass the emergency vehicles either safely going 80 or so, or slamming on your brakes to go 60, which I think is more dangerous.

That's actually good to know, because I honestly thought it was all lanes going the same way had to slow down. So its an actual fact that you don't have to slow down if you're on the 2nd or 3rd lane?

I actually like to follow emergancy vehicles when they are speeding with their lights on, everyone clears out of their way, so it's clear sailing through any kind of traffic. If you get really close to their bumper, you can cut down on wind resistance as well, just like in Nascar. Try it sometime.

This is one thing that annoys this hell out of me, the words needs to get out about going 60 with emergency vehicles around!
