Default MLB Offseason thread

Well with the World Series having ended 6 days ago, players will start filing for free agency, some teams will hire new managers and of course some eventual trades. Where will A-Rod end up?

http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=221985&hubname=

Jays sign Matt Stairs for 2 more years today. Looks like a 2 year 3.25 million dollar deal so 1.625 per year. He was extremely productive for them last year and can play both corner outfield positions and fill in at first or DH if need be. Seems to like playing in Toronto so seems like a good move for the Jays to resign him.

In my NYY biased opinion - A-Rod and Boras have a deal lined up with Boston - just like they did with JD Drew last year. Angels aren't interested and I think the Dodgers are still pissed off at Boras for the JD Drew crap last year.

If that were the case then why not announce now? Further why would Boston put together something that downstages its own WS victory?

A-Rod can only negotiate with the Yanks until Nov 14 (or around that date) - after that he can sign with other teams. I think the deal was done long before the World Series series (Boras was seen with Larry Luchino at a Cavs game during the ALCS). The timing of the announcement was a screwup on Boras' part. Damn, I'm starting to sound like a conspiracy theorist

And the Yankees go and sign Lowell as a UFA?

A-Rod is a much better hitter and player, but I think Lowell would porbably fit quite well with the rest of that team. A guy who maybe can come up with the big hit that the Yankees haven't been able to get in the post season.

I actually think A-Rod will end up with the Cubs and that they'll give him the chance to be a Short Stop again. He's played for Piniella before and played quite well for him. They'll plug him into the 4th spot in that lineup behind Derrick Lee and in front of Aramis Ramirez.

Holy Crap!

The AL just got alot stronger!

The Tigers have won the Miguel Cabrera sweepstakes. Detroit will get Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis from Florida for six players -- Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, catcher Mike Rabelo and three minor league prospects.

From TSN:

Cabrera, who was rumored to be heading to Anaheim at the beginning of the week, joins a lineup in Detroit that is already loaded with the likes of Magglio Ordonez, Gary Sheffield, Carlos Guillen, Curtis Granderson, Edgar Renteria, Placido Polanco and Ivan Rodriguez.
With Brandon Inge at third base, Cabrera could move to the outfield. However, the Tigers will more than likely try and move Inge.
In 157 games last season Cabrera hit .320 with 34 home runs and 119 RBI - both career bests. Over the course of his five-year career, the four-time All- Star has belted 138 home runs and knocked in 523 runs, while hitting at a .313 clip.

Willis, meanwhile, fits nicely into a rotation that will be headed up by Justin Verlander and rounded out by Jeremy Bonderman, Kenny Rogers and Nate Robertson.

Very strong lineup!

As for the Marlins, the only guy I recognize is Maybin. I saw a few games when he was called up last year for the Tigers, and he wasn't too shabby. He could turn into a good one for the Fish.

As for the Tigers, World Series anyone?

Well I guess Mike Illitch can't spend to his hearts content to win with his hockey team anymore so he'll do it in Baseball. No doubt this appears to really strengthen the Tigers.

Maybin and Miller are both absolutely amazing prospects. Maybin was rated #3 overall in baseball.

Anyways as far as Cabrera goes, according to BBref:

Similar Batters through Age 24
  1. Hank Aaron (950) *
  2. Ken Griffey (917)
  3. Frank Robinson (911) *
  4. Orlando Cepeda (910) *
  5. Hal Trosky (902)
  6. Joe Medwick (894) *
  7. Al Kaline (893) *
  8. Mickey Mantle (892) *
  9. Andruw Jones (882)
  10. Vladimir Guerrero (879)
Pretty darn nice list to have under your name.

The tigers better get Cabrera inked long term. His contract next season will rival Arods. He'll easily get the 3rd largest contract in MLB history, easily.

If this was a fantasy league deal, it would be denied. Loria is a total loser, how he keeps any fans in the seats in Miami is a mystery. Maybe he's pulling a "Major League" to try and get the heck outta town. Seems to be a habit for him.

Habby I think it's like the CFL. It's a summer thing to do and you have a lot of fun just soaking up the sun and people watching. Plus you are there with your buddies and just enjoying the atmosphere. Winning sure does not seem to matter as many of the teams have seemingly no shot at success. But I've enjoyed many a Stamps game no matter how the team is doing on the field. Compare that to hockey where it's indoors with a more often than not boring crowd and little atmosphere till the playoffs. The GAME has to be the reason you show up. Consider the cost as well. Dang cheap to go the Stamps. Your expectations of what has to be presented in front of you are lowered and you just settle in for a fun afternoon/evening.

I think you can put dang near anybody out there and be alright. Plus with the big TV contract baseball has as a backup to fan support it would really take some mismanagement to have to fold the tents.

They have the worst attendance in all of the major leagues, and I still think that's wayyy to high for people to actually go see that crap. Loria is simply the worst owner in all of the sporting world.

Miami is just a terrible market for Baseball. The heat and humidity there in the summer are oppressive and no one wants to sit outside and watch a ball game there. Than add in an owner like Loria and it just compounds the problem. MLB has some markets that just aren't working, even with the Expos being moved to DC.
