I don't know if there is such a thing as 'cheap nice flowers'. You generally get what you pay for, at least up to a point.

I worked at the hospital for years and was always impressed with Red Rose Florist - and have been using them myself now for a few years with many compliments from the ladies when i send roses. Not cheap but you definitely get the wow factor without being the most expensive either...

Superstore! It's definitely not overwhelmingly nice but it does the trick for 20 bucks!

My sister and I were given $60 to go buy a bouquet of flowers for my grandmother's 80th birthday last year, and of all places, we went to the Safeway across from Marlborough Mall. I realize that's not in the SouthEast, but man, it was a gorgeous bouquet. They made it custom for us right there.

Safeway. My wife's uncle used to buy flowers for his mom every time he went to see her, and he always went to Safeway.

Safeway and Co-op sell them.

SE (ish) there is a little flowershop on the NW corner of Southland and Elbow. Not sure about prices.

You can get a massive bouquet at Costco for 1/2 the price of other places.

Go to Costco.

Belive it or not costco has really cheap flowers that are quite high quality. (roses anyways)

I'm thinking of the Beacon Hill location, not sure if all Costco's have flowers.

edit: did we all post that at the same time??

Yeah, I find Safeway as good a place as any for a bouquet when sucking up/being chivalrous to girls. Flowers are flowers. They have petals and are colorful and smell good, I don't really see how some of these little floral shops and their expensive specialty flowers can even compete. Someone should pull a Pepsi challenge on these flowers' asses and see if their old lady can tell the difference.

Grocery storess will probably be the cheapest. I have always had luck at Dutch Touch on Fairmount Dr. SE, very good customer service.

If you're going the grocery store route, definitely hit up Co-op. They keep their bouquets in a humidified fridge whereas safeway just has theirs sitting out.

If you need a quick bunch of Flowers, go to safeway or coop. However, they are not the longest living things around.

I find a specialized flower shop, go in, say your budget, say who it is for and describe her. They can usually do something damn fancy that we'd have no chance of doing.

I can sure tell the difference and i know most experienced girls can too.

And when i worked at the front desk at the hospital and would watch the flowers come in i could generally tell just by a quick glance which flowers came from which florist.

There are always exceptions but the higher-end flowers tend to live longer, have thicker/longer/straighter stems, have more consistant and/or vibrant colour, and more/fresher aroma - or some combination there-of. They also tend to be better packaged and more presentable as a gift.

I would pay $65 v. $45 (for example) for the difference between Safeway/Co-op/Costco roses and Red Rose roses any day of the week and twice on Sundays!

But i guess that also explains why girls are so extra impressed when i send them flowers from a premium place. If the competition has been sending them Safeway and Growers Direct crap...

Some people just don't put a premium on that sort of thing though. Everyone has their thing... some people will spend thousands on car parts or model trains and not an extra penny on flowers or clothes. I am the opposite.

The main difference is the arrangements themselves. You will get nice flowers from the grocery stores, but most of them are the generic variety, mums, carnations, greenery, same type of arrangements. Just fine for saying I was thinking of you.

But if you want a WOW factor, go to a good florist, long established. Their arrangements will be superior, not just the standard round posey type. They will use exotic flowers, some of which will last a month, all will usually last longer than from your grocery stores. Use flower shops when you want to say more than I was thinking of you.
