Default Stomach ulcers

So apparently I have a stomach ulcer. Has anyone else had one of these before? Obviously I'm going to be taking antibiotics, so I'll be off the booze but does anybody have any other diet suggestions?

I have small one right now... no spicy food and no carbonated food helps a lot as well.

No, they're just guessing for now. I have a breath test on Wednesday (thank god it's not a scope) but it's pretty painful and I have no idea what else it would be. Probably the crappiest day of the year to have this especially since I'm going to the game tonight.

You could say that but sometimes it gets pretty sharp. I doubled over at one point today. It seems to be the worst just before and just after I eat. I've only been eating one or two small meals a day because that's all my stomach can take. The pain is about halfway between my navel and my solar plexus.

[quote=fotze;1126941It may help you while you wait for the appointment (but on second thought I think the breathe teste tells you not to take things like that a week prior IIRC).[/quote]

Yep. The doctor gave me some sample stuff to try and told me I couldn't touch it until after the tests. The good news is that the test is on Wednesday so it's not like I have to wait an excruciating amount of time. It was also convenient that I already have a physical with my regular doctor scheduled for the 24th of January, so I can use that as a follow up.

My g/f used to get that kind of thing....she quit eating bread and stopped drinking milk and that seemed to help. Get off the beer as well, and switch to coolers, or some other drink without large amounts of yeast in it.

Dude, all the cool kids are doing it. I was going to start a thread titled "if you could bring back any cooler" and post "Rockaberry" in it, but it conjured up memories of spewing all over the toilets at a grade 9 dance.

When I was 23 and started my IB job away from home in t.o. i was eating out everynight and drinking heavy... even compared to university. 6 months in, I was getting pains in my gut that felt like i got shot with exploding bullets. One minute Id be rockin' it out at the club, the next Id be keeled over in pain. I had a friend who had been thru the same thing and knew that milk would give temporary relief. So far a while Id be ordering drinks with a milk chaser. You know they charge more for a glass of milk than a highball? As a stupid young kid, Id still party hard and drink like a fish (and eat hot spicy food which I love) and bring Pepto and Tums to the clubs with me.

After I quit my job and went back to B-school, I smartened up and changed my lifestyle. In the padt few years or more Ive only had ulcer pains in handful of hardcore stressful and boozefilled ocaisons.

ADVICE - read up on ulcers... theres a lot of recent medical advancement in the sutdy of ulcers in terms of causes and treatments so stuff that was valid and accepted 5 years ago is now dismissed.
Youre likely going to have to change your lifestyle or you will always suffer from this.

BOTTOM LINE - If youre not spitting up blood - then party hard tonite.

Did they indicate what caused this ulcer? And why are you asking for advice on an Internet forum? Ask your doctor.

Not necessarily. My doctor has spent 10 minutes with me answering questions. I thinki many of you are pretty bright, but no way I'm asking medical questions here.

A lot of people have confidence problems talking to doctors, and it has been my experience that men are worse for that than women. But a GP is where you should start.

1. Have a list with your symptoms so that you can accurately describe what you are experiencing to your doctor. If you do not have a list, quite often you will get nervous and then some of the things you wished to talk about go out of your head. So make a list and go over it.

2. Tell him how long this has been occurring, what you have done to try and ease the symptoms, has it helped, have things become progressively worse, whatever. Tell him if there are any other members of your family that have these conditions and if so what they were diagnosed as etc.

3. If you have done some research, and you think you might possibly have symptoms of certain conditions, mention them to your doctor.

4. Whatever you do, do not let your doctor simply dismiss you in an untimely fashion. Again, that is why it is important to have a prepared list of what you wish to discuss with the doctor.

A doctor can not help you if you do not accurately describe what you are experiencing. If you are open and polite to the doctor, describing what you have to the best of your ability, it has been my experience that the doctor will give you the correct amount of time to find out what you do or do not have. And if you find your experience to be otherwise, and if that same behaviour is repeated at the next visit to that doctor, then find someone else, even if you just have to do the walk in clinic routine. Only you know what you are experiencing and there will be a doctor out there who will know what you have.

If after repeated visits, your condition is still not diagnosed, then ask for referral to a specialist if your GP has not already suggested that. And hopefully the GP has suggested ultrasound or other tests to at least start you on that process.

Went for the breath tests today and got some sample Pantoloc that I have yet to try. The pain seems only marginal now so perhaps it's going away and I don't need to worry. Just seems kind of weird that it's been bothering me for all of December and then suddenly disappears.

Wow. Thats rough luck man, hope for the best.

I used to work with a guy who's little brother drank so much that he had a stomach ulcer and couldnt drink anymore.

By the age of 15!

Thats what you get when you grow up in a small town with nothing else to do I guess. Its still crazy though.

Wow, this is really weird, because I've had really bad heartburn for years, and I've tried everything.
Finally went to see a doctor about it, and he told me to ge the breath test, along with some other things, and also gave me a two week sample of Pantoloc.

I haven't had a single tum/rolaid in a week, which as I can reacall, the longest I've gone in years.

Seriously man, lay off bread, milk and OJ, and cut back on beer. My g/f was the same way, and when she cut back on all those her voracious heartburn was gone in 2 weeks.

I can second this. I have a lot of trouble with my stomach and have found that reducing or eliminating most carbohydrates, heavy fats and dairy products helps tremendously.

Also, cut down on the amount of red meat.

Not easy to follow though since that pretty much covers 100% of the average Albertan's diet.

Yeah, I've tried all of those things and to no avail.
I hate going to the doctor so I tried to figure it out on my own for quite a while, and had no success. Hopefully I can get it all sorted out now.

just out of curiosity.
have the suggested that it might be pancreatitis?
the symptons are similar to an ulcer but are typically enduced by alcohol.
I had a similar experience to yours about 5 years ago and it damn near killed me.
found out my pancreas doesnt work as well as it should, therefore, I have not had an alcoholic beverage since.
the pain though is excruitiating and seems to build without letting up. I ended up being hospitalized and they almost lost me in the emergency room.
just my thoughts though.
