Default Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins hits the theaters in 2009

Christian Bale to be the new John Connor

I was going to put this in The Dark Knight thread, but thought it deserved it's own.

Quote:
It's not Arnold back as the Terminator, so who is it? "It is a new character introduced in the mythology that's not replacing Arnold [Schwarzenegger]. It's not like he's stepping into Arnold's shoes. It's a completely new character." Is it a Terminator at least? "No, not really. That's one of the big twists…"

If Bale is on board, you can bet I'll be going to see it. Should be solid.

Sweet...seems like they are gonna take it in a good direction. I didn't care too much for Terminator 3.

Bloody hell. I wrote this off completely as I totally expected it to be some lame Hollywood movie where they stuck ex-Wrestlers in the roles. Now it's Christian Bale and I guess I will have to live long enough to see this since I claim to be the first heterosexual Christian Bale fan since he showed everybody his business card for Pierce & Pierce.

This completely saves the series as T3 had no legitimacy or continuity without Furlong for me but Bale irons out any role discrepancies.

I'm laying down a firm bet now that Bale will be one actor of our generation that plays the most iconic action/sci-fi roles all at once. He may even be a Bond someday.

I hope it re-ignites this storyline.

Christian Bale did it with Batman, if he does it with Terminator as well, then he'll really hit it BIG time.

The weak link is the shoddy music video director who is doing this (he did Charlie's Angels 2)

You will not find a bigger Terminator fan than me, but I am not all that excited about this. I was happy with the way it ended in number 2. It was the perfect ending. The way they brought it back for number 3 was a little forced and the ending obviously made it open to a sequel. But what I liked about the Terminator series was the fact that these machines were battling in a modern day setting and that was the appeal. Now, it's just gonna be another post-apocolyptic war movie and that has been done before.

I'm still gonna see it and I love Christian Bale(American Psycho, Machinist, Equilibrium, Batman.....all amazing) but I just don't dig the idea as this seems likes a forced movie. Just another money making movie. They should have never made the third one. Now, we're gonna have Terminator 7 in 10 years.

I'm I reading this right?

"ANDERSON: John Connor is an ongoing, very central character throughout the next trilogy."

Put me in the minority, but I actually liked a lot of things about the third terminator movie.

Lets be honest, it was clearly a setup for the future wars, and it was a demonstration that even though you can try, you can't prevent the future from happening.

I didn't think that Nick Stahl was strong enough to pull off the John Conner that they wanted, the John Conner that we were left with after the second movie, was a crafty strong person who just didn't take crap from anyone.

The John Conner in the third movie to me was reactive and trying to avoid a future that I think he knew was coming. And John Conner would have never opted to just let the timer keep running.

The thing about the fourth movie is that it will depend on when they're going to set it in the war. I'd certainly like to see it at the start that they talked about where the human's were being herded into extermination camps, and Conner comes out of nowhere to rally whats left of humanity.

I remember in the first movie they showed John Conner standing with his leftenants, he had a massive scar on his face, and he looked like his humanity had been drained from him. thats the John Conner that I want to see, ruthless, no speck of humor, and a leader not a foot soldier.

Also in the early part of the war if I remember they didn't need arnold because there were no terminators with exo-skin. Then they had the ones with Rubber Skin. They wouldn't need the iconic Arnold Terminator because he didn't come in to play until the end of the war when he was sent through the time machine. Hell they could just digitally scan Arnold and make a mask if they needed to and you could see him from a distance stepping into the time displacment grid.

I would rather see Bale stick with the iconic role of Batman. Knowing that he is Batman, and John Connor ruins any chance of Batman vs. Terminator... unless he is Eddie Murphy like, and can pull off 6 characters at a dinner table.

In all honosty, I think this is a bad move for Bale. He's Batman... be known for that, and nothing else.

I don't know, he was awesome in Empire of the Sun and is well known for that movie.

Christian Bale is in like EVERY movie right now. I watched this movie Rescue Dawn (which was pretty good by the way). Who was in it? You guessed it... Christian Bale. Everyone seems to like him so they just put him in every movie.

That was in T2, at the beginning during Sarah's voice over.

I'm not saying that he's not a good actor. He's an amazing actor IMO. The thing is, when you say the name John Conner, people know that's a part of Terminator. It's an iconic role. I've never seen Empire of the Sun, but even if I had, I don't think I would remember the name of his charactor. I love "The Departed", but I can't for the life of me remember any of the character's names.

I'm not suggesting that Bale should retire, except for the odd Batman movie every 2 years. What I am saying is that I think that if he takes on too many iconic roles, he could become oversaturated, and thus have the same career as Ben Affleck right now.

He fixed Batman... not singlehandedly, but it would be tough to see anyone else in that role right now. Be an amazing actor, but don't try to fix every franchise, or step into iconic roles if you don't have to.

Which was the fundamental philosophical problem with T3 (believe me, I wrote a 4th year English paper on the philosophy of the Terminator films). The first two films were entirely predicated on the idea that the future is not a fixed certainty: to quote "there is no future except what we make for ourselves." The end of T2, Dyson's research is destroyed, the chip and arm from the original Terminator are destroyed, the T-1000 and the second Terminator are destroyed, leaving nothing for Skynet to built from. Yet then T3 comes along, Skynet gets built anyway (with no explanation for the continuity there), and the philosophy is now "the future is set no matter what, you can't change it no matter how hard you try"? Please. I was very disappointed with this. At any rate, I'm a sucker and will go see this one too...
