Default The Christmas Present Advice Thread

I thought it would be a good idea to start an all-purpose thread for questions and advice on Christmas shopping.

Myself? I'm looking for a set of professional (or profession quality) kitchen knives -- the 8 to 16 piece types that come in the ubiquitous wooden block.

I know Henckels is a good brand. Any others? What kind of price range am I looking at? Whereabouts in town can I find 'em?

So, any CalgaryPuck elves out there?

My wife and I bought a bunch of Cutco knives. The best you will ever buy. The only problem is that from what I know they dont sell them in retail stores in Canada.

Wüsthof is high end and rather pricey. Don't know what Canadian prices would be, but down here, an 8-piece set would start in the $350+ range; 16-piece set would start at $700+. Can be found at Williams-Sonoma in Chinook Centre

Gifts for guys who love their high-tech toys, don't forget to check out places like tigerdirect.com before you bend over for Future Shop and Best Buy.

Hit me up with some mom gifts. She's retired and perhaps bored.

I could also use some girlfriend gift ideas. Last year, not only did I forget her birthday (and when she asked, I didn't know and got it wrong... after dating her for a year) since I wasn't prepared, I gave her a hug. (Her birthday is right after Christmas)

What's a good brownie points gift?

Please replace the word "Christmas" in the thread title with "Holiday", some might find it offensive..

This joke writes itself. Its taking all of my self control to restrain myself.

On the same note though, has anyone ever heard of these picture frames that are essentially a flat screen and they display the pictures from your digital camera? I'd like to know where to get one of those....

I was at Target last week and saw some there...they looked sweet and I thought about getting one, but it was a couple hundred bucks! They looked awesome though.

I figured they'd be pricey, but I think she'd really love it. I might have difficulty making it to a target before christmas though....

If I went to a store, what would I even be asking for? What is this called? Who makes it? I just described it on here, but I dont want to be drawing a diagram on a staffer's tie to get my point across.

I believe they are just called a video photo frame or digital photo frame, something like that. The price will depend on first of all the size, and second, what capacity it can hold, in other words, how many pictures.

I have seen them at the Bay and Sears for less than $200, I think around 5 x 7 in size, maybe 8 x 10, cant remember what the memory was though, that will vary too. But like I said, they are all over the place, I am sure probably Future shop, the Source etc might carry them too.

So, my mom, like most women, frets about her weight. I.e. going on diets, watching her weight, etc. However, she uses a crappy $5.00 scale. Is a fancy-pantsy digital scale a suitable gift? Of course, it can come across as "you're fat", but she most definitely isn't. What do you think? Is a weight scale reasonable gift?

Did she make you sleep on the couch?

Seriously you could get her a certificate to a spa.

How about a discretely placed load cell in the bathroom floor?
