VISNOSKY MAKES THE MOST OF HIS 2 MINUTES
Gerber wins 2nd in 3 games

Martin Gerber finishes his brief run as Sabres starter with 2 wins in 3 games. Look for JS Giguere to return to action shortly. Newly acquired Dman Lubomir Visnosky played 2 minutes, picked up an assist and then knocked Pavel Datsyuk out of the game, getting tossed as a result. The Sabres scored 3 unanswered to take the win, in what was really a must win game. C Espen Knutsen did not arrive in time to dress, much to the chagrin of the hundreds of Norwegian-Buffalonians who turned up for the game. Kim Johsson remains pointless in 7 games as a Sabre, making Looooob wonder why he gutted his team to get this slug.

Twin City Times

Oh oh!

Wild lose 2nd Straight Game

For the 2nd straight game the Minnesota Wild failed to step up to the plate…only this time the game was there for the taking.

The Wild took an early 3-1 lead on the Calgary Flames but fell apart, eventually losing 4-3. The Wild were badly outshot in the game but were held in the game with strong goaltending from Jocelyn Thibault. The Wild played with essentially the same lines as in Wednesday’s loss against the Sharks, and as such were without Willie Mitchell, Sami Kapanen, and David Vyborny.

However – the Wild should not use this as an excuse as the team they were playing is battling injuries of their own and were without Eric Daze and Marco Sturm.

For the 2nd straight game Head Coach Grant Farhall called into question his team’s character.

“The Flames tonight showed how you should deal with injuries. They came out and took it to us for 60 straight minutes. It is disappointing to not see the same level of commitment or effort from our players.”

Thankfully for the Wild reinforcements are on the way. Chris Gratton was acquired late last night for David Vyborny and will be in the lineup in tomorrow’s game against the Bruins. Sami Kapanen is also said to be very close to returning, but will likey be held out for one more game. Willie Mitchell is still about a week away from returning.

Game Notes

-The Wild got goals from Andrew Brunette, Brendan Morrison and Yannik Tremblay. Tremblay and Brunette both had two point games
-Matthias Ohlund was a –2 on the night and is not playing up to expectations.
-After the game the players held a closed door meeting to discuss their play in the last two games.
-Jocelyn Thibault is expected to get the start in tomorrow’s game.

Senators back in the win column and back into 2nd place in the conference and League.

With a 2-1 win over the Feisty Hawks.

Bates scored Short Handed and then assists on Alfredsson's game winning goal.

Turco returns to get the victory.

Next up 2 games off before we play the Sharks.

BEEN CAUGHT STEALING, "JANI'S" ADDICTION TOPS CHARTS
Backup tender steals game for tired Oilers squad

Well it's just a simple fact, when you want to win a hockey game, and don't want to play for it....your goalie has to step up and steal it for you. That is exactly what Oiler backup tender Jani Hurme did to the powerful Atlanta Thrashers today in a 2-0 Oiler victory over the CPHL leading Thrashers. Playing for the 4th time in as many nights and on the heels of an embarassing 3-2 OT loss to the struggling Blackhawks the Oilers needed something special to happen to extend their point streak to 8 games. Jani Hurme was indeed up to the challenge as he turned away all 36 shots directed his way in posting his third straight win as an Oiler, and first shutout with the team.

The Oilers came out and executed their game plan well as they grabbed an early lead on Marian Hossa's 7th of the season 3:57 into the game. Hossa finished off a well executed passing play on a 3-2 rush when he sild in behind Lecavalier, took the drop pass and found the top corner with a quick wrist shot in the high slot. From there the two teams were fairly even, with the Oilers keeping most Thrasher shots from the outside. The Oilers extended the lead to two goals when Jay McKees wrister from the point found it's way through a maze of players in front of the net and beat a screened Patrick Lalime low to the blocker side.

From that point the Thrashers pressed hard to climb back into the game, but were unable to solve the Oilers finn netminder. Although a majority of the Thrasher shots were from the perimeter, the Georgia birds did come close on a third period powerplay in which they directed 4 quality shots towards Hurme, with Glenn Murray ringing one off the cross bar.

Oiler GM Sylvanfan was mildly satisfied with his teams performance "Atlanta is a really tough team, and if you let them get the first goal it's lights out. So I was pleased that we were able to grab the early lead, and hold it. I also have to give credit to Jani Hurme for stepping up and meeting the challenge today. When we planned our goalie rotation at the start of the week we told him that he would likely be thrown to the wolves this game and would have to do something special to win it. He accepted the challenge and exceeded our expectations."

The Oilers will now take a day off before travelling to Miami on Saturday to face GM Sylvanfan's former team the Panters. When asked if the game would be special to him Sylvanfan commented "Not, so much, that's a completely different squad than what I had, and likely a better one. They have a lot of good young players and if they can keep it together they'll be a very strong team in the near future. The only ill will I hold towards them is the way in which they classlessly axed Don Shula without giving him so much as a game to prove that he's a legend."

In a couple of minor moves the Oilers aquired big blueliner Jassen Cullimore from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for AHL'er Anton Volchenkov and a 3rd round pick in 2006. The Oilers have also waived prospect tender Anterro Nittymaki in hopes of getting him to the AHL to play some games. "Anterro is a good prospect, but he's 3 years away from being able to play in this league. Money is too hard to come, and having a guy sit there and collect 1.1million who can't even help you is a real handicap if you want to stay competitive. If someone else does claim him I'm sure we'll have a chance to reclaim him back before he's ready for any kind of role in this league."

While everybody expected Sens to beat Hawks, nobody could expect red-hot Hawks to outshot powerhouse Sens 30-25 and force Turco to make a first star performance to get his team a win. Newly acquired Martin Rucinsky scored 2.... er still played for Bruins thougt.... gamestory to follow

Blues take the Avs for second straight night

Playing their 4th game in 4th night, and the second of home and home with the Avs, the BLues came up with a 5-4 win. The Avalanche, 2nd ranked team in CPHL before the home and home, lost both games to the Blues which started backup Steve Shields in the game.

The story of the game was Denis Gauthier intentionally injuring Steve Schields late in the 3rd by doing his best impersonation of Ville in the playoffs.

"We cannot tolerate that kind of behaviour. Thats unacceptable." the Blues coach said after the game.

Mathieu Dandenault lately critisized for his defensive play led the way with a +4 rating. On the scoresheet, Petr Cejanek had a goal and 2 assist. Also scoring for the Blues were Kallio(1) Linden (3) Zetterberg (8) Hecht (3).

The Blues special teams were not so special going 0 for 4 on the PP, and surrendering 4, yes FOUR goals when the Avs were a man up, but they got one by Hecht while a man down.

Next up: Blues fly to Calgary to face the flames tommorow.

First time this season Hawks outshot their opponents but never got a point. Once again robbed by opponent’s netminder posting 1st star performance and powerplay conceding instead of scoring, Hawks lost a close 2-1 to Cup contender Ottawa Senators.

This time Hawks were not desperate to stop any losing streaks, so they start off slowly as they usually do. Hawks powerplay let in a goal by Shawn Bates and Senators took a lead after first. In second Hawks fired back in second outshooting Sens 10-8, but Alfredson scored a PP marker with 31 seconds to go in the period. Third period was all Hawks, as trailing team fired 13 shots on Turco and Hawks best line of Yachmenev, Hudler and Hossa finally solved resident keeper with less than 2 minutes to go.

“Hawks are great”, said Hawks GM right after the game. “It was much better performance than people expected. With McDonald and Bulis back, we now have enough forwards to generate offense. The only problem is the injury to starting goalie Brent Johnson, who is reported day-to-day. Martin Rucinsky scored 2 PP goals for Bruins and we expect our PP to improve when he’ll come to the town.”

TIRED WINGS STEAL 2 POINTS

With Elias and Lankow both rotting on the bench trying to mend it has given some others the opportunity to get more ice time. Brenden Morrow who was moved to the top line after joining the Wings is going to make it tough for coach guns to take him off that line when Elias heals. Brenden recored three more points giving him 7 points in the last two nights and 8 points in three games since being aquired from the Oilers. Other players who have enjoyed the added ice time is Jason Chimera with his first point of the season and Jason Krogg with a goal and a assist. The wings sticking to there North American game plan racked up another 500 pms. They make me so proud!

With Miika Kiprosoff watching from the bench, Cristobal Huet started his third game in a row and played average hockey. He had enough left in him to hold on in the third from a charging Thrasher team. Freddy Braithwaite will take over the backup role leaving Huets future in question.

With Patric Elias nursing a sprained ankle he was left on the Wings roster and the plan was to play him on the second powerplay unit. Oddly enough Elias racked up 16 minutes of icetime and is now one tickle away from the General hospital. It is not yet known if Elias will play in tomorrows tilt against the avalanche.
