As someone who listens to urban music about 80% of the time, I'm interested to hear what some of you more well-rounded music fans think of Kanye's album.

For hip hop heads it's an exuberant and daring album, and time will tell if it's the masterpiece lots of people are saying it is. Just wondering if it's as enjoyable a listen for people who don't go out of their way to listen to hip hop records.

----

This is always a great thread. I'll take a few days and put together my list of my ten best hip hop albums of the year and post it here.

It's an enjoyable listen and I have no ear for hip hop normally. It has a lot of nice melodies and is more complex than most hip hop. That's what has always turned me off to hip-hop was the constant beat, so boring.

Content wise it's strong too. Kanye really delves as deep as he's capable, there's a lot of sincerity.

It is the highest rated new release in 2010 (not counting re-issues).

Normally I would not be especially interested, but the buzz may cause me to check it out. I did not especially understand the praise for College Dropout.

I am biased because anything with Wu-Tang influence I will buy and listen to religiously.. Raekwon kills it in Gorgeous and Rza's influence is very noticeable on Dark Fantasy.

I gave it a once over so far and was impressed, it made my ipod for the gym today so we will see what happens.

I am an old school hip hop head that doesn't really like any of the new stuff, so it is a big step for me to embrace this style of album.

Primarily I am a hip hop fan but do listen to lots of other genre's and personally I think Kanye's album is my favorite of the year.

The production on the album is just so intricate, and it is really deep for a hip hop album. The album is just so deep start to finish.

Once the album was released I was actually dissapointed that he leaked some of the songs as Good Friday tracks because that actually took away from how great the whole album was because I had already over listened to those tracks.

Other Favorites of mine from this year:
Sigh No More-Mumford and Sons Favorite Track: The Cave
High Violet- The National Favorite Track: Runaway
Broken Bells-Broken Bells Favorite Track: Vaporize
Swim-Caribou Favorite Track(s): Odessa, Sun
Man on The Moon II-Kid Cudi Favorite Track(s): The End, Scott Mesicudi vs The World

More I can't remember without my I-Pod on me.

Also I like this site for Album rankings because it compiles the different rankings for different sites and blogs and not just one persons thoughts (much like Metacritic).

I hate Mumford and Sons, mainly because of overplay, but I hate hate hate The National. They need some crack or something in their diet.

I don't get the affection for The National either. I have tried to get into it, but is is such somber, depressing stuff.

I stopped listening to the radio about three years back (once I got an 80 GB ipod) for the overplay reason you gave, overplay just kills good music and makes you hate it.

The National is weird for me, not my usual taste at all but something that just seemed to catch my attention.

One of those things that you can't really focus on the lyrics too closely, and have to just listen to the flow and melodies of the song. Also you really have to be in the right mood for that type of music.

Philistine

I think that The National needs to be properly listened to on headphones with a couple thumbs of whiskey after a long day.

2010 is arguably the best year in a long time for new music. There were so many releases, it was hard to keep up. What does that say about an apparent 'dying industry'? Corporate music really took a back seat this year. I can't remember another time where so many debut albums were coming.

Top 5 albums of the year for me, also in no particular order:

Brandon Flowers - Flamingo

Favorite track:Jilted Lover and Broken Hearts

Fenech Soler(self titled)

Favorite track: The Great Unknown

Bombay Bicycle Club - Flaws

Favorite track: Ivy and Gold

Mark Ronson & The Business International - Record Collection

Favorite track: The entire album...Or The Bike Song

XX - The XX

Favorite track: Crystalized

Honorable mentions to:

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark and Twisted Fantasy
Kings of Leon - Come Around Sundown
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
The New Pornographers - Together
Sleigh Bells - Treats

So many others I could list...

Also, not to be forgotten, the worst album of 2010:

M.I.A - MAYA. What a train wreck. Miley Cyrus's album was also awful, but there were no expectations for otherwise from her. Plus she's (18 now) hot.
