Default Resource Canada Fuel Guide

So....I have been banging around the idea of buying a truck for some time now. I know which one I want and have found exactly what I'm looking for. Amusing thing is, the very first thread I read on this forum after finding it was gas hitting $1.50/litre come spring. Now I know trucks (4x4 in particular) use more gas than your average car but I'm trying to figure out how much more it will cost me per month. I have been looking at an American website regarding pretty much every vehicle made within the past 15 yrs and their fuel use and then found the one below from the goverment of Canada.

http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/transportatio...ype=TSP&attr=8

While the American site suggest I would be getting 14-18 mpg, the Canadian site is saying 17-24. Pretty decent sized difference.

Anyone ever played around with this site and able to verify or shoot down its accuracy?

Oh, the truck in question is a 2005 Dodge Dakota. Only 40,000kms and they dealer is selling for only $22,000.

Which model is it.. I have the 2005 Canadian Energuide sitting in my desk drawer next to me.. Also that sounds like quite a bit of money for that truck...Can look it up for you with the model

17 and 25 or 16.3 l/100km 11.1 l/100km

the price on that is too high imho should be in the high teens based on todays market..

Just want to say that a 4x4 will not use (noticibly) more gas than a 2x4 unless you drive in 4x4 all the time. When in 2wd, the only difference between the two trucks will be the extra weight of the transfer case, extra drive shaft, extra diff and a few small parts.

You figure? I have heard that a few times but after looking through the auto trader it seems in the right area. I have seen some as low as $16k but that was the 04 model with only RWD and waaaaay more km's. Average price even for the 04's with 60-100kms on it are usualy high teens low 20's. It is the cheapest I have seen of that truck of that year with that mileage.

4X4, you are our truck guy, what do you think?

I should check with my cousin which year his truck was, but he had a Dakota that he was not too fond of. Was good around town, but it couldn't haul worth crap. He had a tent trailer and it really wasn't up to the job. If it's not up to hauling a tent trailer, I don't know what it would be good for. I think his was more ~2003 though. I don't remember engine size. I'll ask him this weekend.

And FTR, I'm not so much a truck guy as a guy that likes to drive off road. I don't haul. I 4x4 and camp... I think there are bonafide truck guys on this forum though.

It must have been the V6 as I have been told the V8 has plenty of power, more than enough to haul a tent trailer. One guy was actualy towing a travel trailer.

Where can someone look up a suggested price for used vehicles?

There should be an online black book, but I find the best way to get an idea is to prowl the bargain finder and auto trader. Especially for a domestic vehicle. You'll get a real feel for the range.

Toyota.ca has a great one for canadian blackbook. Price out a car and look for the 'appraise my trade in" link.
