Default Did Calgary ever have milk men?

Very random question, but this poli sci paper isn't gonna get much further without a break. I grew up in Regina and I remember putting out the money and the sign the night before, and waking up in the morning with milk on your front step. So did Calgary ever have anything like this?

Our neighbour had a milk man even up until a few years ago when I moved away.

Then anyone with any ideas how long ago it stopped?

We lived in Wildwood first, then Palliser, up until 1980, then we moved SW of Calgary in the country.

Both areas that I mentioned had milk delivery. You had a small milk chute door by your back entrance, you put out your money and order and the milk man put your product in the milk chute the next day. It was never placed on my front step.

When it stopped, that I do not know, but think it continued until at least 1990.

There's still a neighbor of mine that gets milk delivered. I am sure it still happens to an extent in Calgary.

We had a milk man and milk delivery until 2 months ago. Then they had to cancel it due to lack of stafff. If it ever got offered again in our area we'd take it in a heartbeat.

I really miss the service. Considering I haven't had it in like 12 years, so I've gotten used to it. But so often I have to run out for milk, and only milk, it would be awesome to just be able to have your milk delivered to you.

Uh...beep?

We were getting our milk delivered until a few months ago. Were out of town and didn't need it for a bit and never started it up again. I do miss it though, man I hate going for milk when I don't have it.

Looking for your father ......

Seriously though, it used to be provided through the big dairy processors; Alpha, Beatrice, etc. I used the service up to the early '90's.

It is still available, as part of delivery from organic and specialty markets.

A google search also netted this result..... a milk delivery business for sale.

Yep, it existed and was awesome. We used it my entire life until we moved away in 1990. Not sure what happened to the service after that.

"BEEP", a beverage sold in Saskatchewan, Canada in the 1960's and 1970's. Similar in taste to powdered orange juice (but sold as a liquid in cartons similar to milk cartons) with prune juice as a minor constituent.

A sort of fruit juice blend, largely with artificial flavouring. Heavy on the citrus flavour to mask the prune content.

You can still get it in the Maritimes apparently. This is the modern packaging.

The old school cartons had a kickass Warner Bros. Roadrunner look-alike on the carton.

Ingredients: Water, sugar, concentrated orange juice, concentrated apple juice, apricot puree, citric acid, prune syrup, orange pulp, modified corn starch, canola oil, flavour, sodium citrate, colour, sodium benzoate, ascorbic acid.

Haha. I thought the use of beep in this thread was covering up an expletive that wasn't approrpriate for CP. And I was confused as to why the male population were so fond of this delivery, as I thought the milkmen usually reserved it for the female customers.

Oh yeah, Super Socco was the bees knees. There was also Super Socco gum, IIRC.

And milk in bags -- the first thing I think of now when I think of a bag of milk is all the fun/trouble you could have with it. It never even crossed my mind to do anything with a bag of milk other than drink it when I was a tyke. What a wasted opportunity.
