Default Evel Kneivel passes away at age 69

Quote:
Evel Knievel, the hard-living motorcycle daredevil whose jumps over Greyhound buses, live sharks and Idaho's Snake River Canyon made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.
I remember being so disappointed when the Snake Canyon thing didn't work. That just added to my disappointment that he wasn't trying it on a motorcycle (well I was 6 at the time).

Gotta respect the guy. Looked fear in face and challenged death. Can't say he didn't live life to the fullest.

RIP!

I had the snake river canyon play set, came complete with an action figure, and a parachute that deployed on launch.

I was amazed when Rob Kerr mentioned on the radio this afternoon that the Snake River Canyon jump was in 1971. I thought for sure it was more in the mid-seventies, as I recall it very well. I was a bit young to remember the Caesar's Palace jump.

Young'uns just have no idea how popular he was in the seventies.

Rest In Peace, Evel.

Wow, he was on Live from Wayne Gretzky's last Saturday and said in the interview that he doesn't have much time left. Guess he wasn't kidding...

Kerr must have made a mistake. I remember it so it couldn't have been '71

Knievel was best known for a failed 1974 attempt to jump Snake River Canyon on a rocket-powered cycle and a spectacular crash at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.

RIP Evel Knieval. There is no other person who made their living by propelling their body into rock and concrete that I have respected more than him. The '68 wipeout at Caesars' Palace would have been my last foray into Daredeviling if I were in that position but he just kept coming back harder. To pulverize one's body in that manner over a long period will take its toll. Knieval was living on stubbornness alone as if simply staying alive was the harrowing feat. RIP showman.

R.I.P. Evel, a fine Montanan.

I can't think of a more appropriate hometown for a guy like him than Butte.

Jim Rome fans will remember the interview he did on the show. Rome asked Evel about that rocket jump/crash and what went wrong. Evel blamed it on a technician's miscalculations. Then Rome asked what the chances of serious injury or death were if the stunt was perfectly planned. Evel says "50-50".
Rome asks why he would do a stunt with such high chances of death. Short pause.
Evel: "Do you know who the hell I am?".

RIP
