Terrible situation...a rhetorical question for any gun-nuts out there...how many shootings have ever been stopped/interfered with by a member of the public carrying a gun? None?

Not true, I believe a couple of years ago some armed texans shot a man attempting to kill his estranged wife on their way into court..
I'm no gun nut and I agree with your sentiment, but it has happened..

In any part of the world, including here in Calgary, there's pretty much nothing stopping someone determined to do this at any time.
So . . . . . why doesn't it happen more often?
What stops you from shooting people you don't know in a public place?
What stops the overwhelming majority of you, regardless of your society or culture, from doing it?

I've often wondered this about domestic terrorism. How hard could it be to really cause a disaster/tragedy in Calgary? Seems like an amazingly few amount of people are mass-murderers.
Good.

(This is not possible in the information age), but what if we could deny these murderers the media attention they desire? Would these murders even happen if wasn't going to be headline news?

Wow, I don't know. I mean a part of me says that these people are glory hogs. They think that they're earning a place in history by killing a lot of people.
But the big argument against that is that they're not going to care because they usually die either through suicide, or suicide via Cops.
Pure and simple this to me is a rage deflection issue. They put the faces of their problems on the people that they shoot, and it gives them a sense of control over their problems and an out for their rage. so except for probably a small percentage, this to me isn't about fame. Its about anger.

I honestly think that the higher the population density, the easier that it would get.
If your smart enough to keep your mouth shut about your plan, and you keep your group small, the chances of a fast police response in Calgary while pretty decent would not prevent you from causing mass damage and panic in a place like Chinook Center at this time of year.
If you get three of your friends and give them each a small submachine gun which can be placed under your jacket. And you co-ordinate your shooting so nobody is ever reloading at the same time. You each take a spot opposite to each other, and you shoot to herd as many people to a central location as possible. You could probably kill a hundred people in as short a time as 5 to 10 minutes.
Grenades are small and have what a 30 meter kill radius and a much larger wounding radius. You drop a couple of those from the second floor of Southcentre into the Santa Clause area.
All you need is the weapons, and good security in your group, and you would have a 5 minute head start on any kind of police reaction.

would it really matter how fast the police responded? outside SWAT they're not equipped or able to deal with that kind of situation.

I've always thought the same thing. I'm surprised this tragic incident doesn't happen more often. You just need one or two crazies and they could take out hundreds of people. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often, but glad that it does not. Horrible to lose lives this way. I'm with the person who said I wish the killers would end their own lives and not take it out on innocent people.

I think there are a lot of people that would like to know what it feels like to kill. The difference however, is that most people value their own life and freedom too much to do it to humans/civillians.
The danger happens when these people also become suicidal and plan on ending their own life. At that point, there is nothing holding them back. Really, once someone decides to end their life, they become powerful. When you know you can turn it all off at some point, there is nothing stopping you.
So really, it is a 2 part question. What makes people dislike other humans so much, and what makes people not want to live themselves? It's likely a combination of several things.

Now that we've generally agreed that we're actually surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more often considering how easy it would be to actually pull off, our populist friend Lou Dobbs on CNN tonight has promised, in future episodes, to tackle the "epidemic of mental illness of similar incidents sweeping across America."
Apparently this year, before this day, there have been four individuals that have killed seven people in four separate mall attack incidents . . . . in a population of 300 million.
Lou . . . . I think you've finally gone off the deep end.

Yeah, have had CNN on in the background the last few nights coming home from work and he's on.
I remember seeing Lou speak at a Junior Achievement Fundraiser here in town back in 1999, just after he left Money Line to head up the Sci Fi Network. Seemed like a normal guy. First time I've sen him since then, I think, was a couple days back.
Although everyone certainly has thier own opinions, I think Lou got captured by some Alien Space Pod since, turning him into the seemingly suddenly outspoken "I'm a registered independant voter so that allows me to be angry and bitch at everyone and not have to defend myself, under the guise of calling myself a "Populist".
Also funny to see him try and rope the reporters that introduce the stories, such as the Omaha thing today, into trying to convert them to his way of thinking.
Over the top with his musings on the societal degredations that causes such an event, and it was cutting ito his time about going on about Communist China's lead toys, seemingly intimating that was being done on purpose.
