Default Any vets on here? Cat question.

I noticed a black spot on the surface of my cats teeth. Its sort of a hole that looks like a round hole about the size and depth of a pinhead and is black around the edges. Its on one of the back teeth in his mouth and the "hole" itself is about half between the top of the tooth and where the gumline.

It doesnt seem to be causing him any pain and he let brush that tooth while I brushed the rest of his teeth. he also hasnt lost any weight or changed the way he eats.

Ill take him into the vet soon but im wondering if this is a cavity or an absess or what? While searching online, i read something about FORLs... is this a possibility?

Any vets on here want to give a quick diagnosis or point me to an online resource?

I'm only the son of a vet, but that sounds like a cavity to me. An abcess tends to be a wound or some sort of puss-filled ailment, its not on the tooth itself as far as i know.

When's the last time you took the cat for a teeth cleaning?

About 2 years ago. We brush his teeth quite regularily however. This is the first time I noticed and probably would have missed it now without the discoloration being present.

How do you get your cat to let you brush your teeth? I'm guessing it's something I should do for my little guy once in a while.

I started brushing his teeth when he was a kitten so he is used to it. I use a small cat tooth brush and use cat tooth paste that is malt flavor. he seems to like the tooth paste because he comes running to me when i have his toothbrush out. I probably could do a better job but vets say anything is better than nothing. I usually try to do it everyother day at least and its just a quick twice over on each tooth.

(Ill lay him on his side and sort of pet him / hold him down then flip him to his other side to get the other side of his teeth.)

He only eats dry food as well which is supposed to be better for their teeth as it cleans them and doesnt stick as wet food does.

It may sound like a lot of work but as a kid we had a cat who ate moist food, didnt get his teeth brushed and didnt get them cleaned at the vet. He was healthy but got terrible dental problems and it made it difficult for him to eat and was not a good situation in general. So thats why the extra care now.

From the Defeated By Weather thread. HulkRogan basically said all people who drive in all-season are lazy and bad people. Since then I have been seriously questioning myself and doing a lot of soul-searching.

After reading that entire thread, I have to ask, over-react much? He never said such a thing, he said that winter tires are safer. He even backed it up with graphs. He suggested that if everyone had winter tires, there would be fewer accidents and the morning commute after snow would go much more smoothly. If you took offense to that, perhaps you should be doing some soul-searching...

What does that have to do with the topic at hand? Keep it where it belongs...

Anyway, i've actually never brushed any of my cats teeth ever but to me it sounds like a cavity... I'm actually curious about this aswell. I don't think pet dentist's exist, or giving your cat a filling..

Call a vet, but let us know. I'd like to know what they think it is and what they do about such things.

True story, I know someone paying insane dental bills for their cat now and the vet basically said it was all preventable if they had brushed his teeth. Said person showed me a bunch of graphs and quotes from articles, and now I'm convinced I should stop being so lazy

I don't have to worry about cheap though, because I still have the old toothbrush I use to clean out the grout.

That's awesome, You might end up with vet bills for a different reason.

I'm love the reaction to it. There has been more discussion on that post and then the topic at hand.
