Rolling your “R’s”!!

No matter how hard I try I cannot do this!

Its rather frustrating…I have family in Mexico who have tried to teach me but no luck

It really makes it difficult to learn a new langue

Can you roll your “R’s?” got any tips?

Can't roll your "R's"?! How do you surivive R-r-roll Up The R-r-rim season?

For me, rolling my R's came naturally. It can be learned with practice though.

Try taking deep breaths and sort of flipping the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth loosely so that your breath blows it back down again. That's how it should feel. Then work on holding the tip of your tongue there while keeping it relaxed so that it vibrates against your palate as you exhale.

I should've paid more attention in linguistics class so I could actually throw out terms like aveolar and palatal and sound like I know what I'm talking about here.

It's a tough one for sure. I'm having a blast watching my young son learn to talk. R is not one of the easier sounds. He's not quite two, but he's darn close to getting it. S is another hard one.

I bet you can get by by simply substituting R with D.

I agree, it's difficult. I am only starting to be able to roll my "r's" when I am speaking (actually rather singing) Ukrainian (I sing in a choir and have only been speaking it for a few years) - I think it just comes with practise, practise and more practise. One problem with me, when I get the r rolling, it's tough to stop and get onto the next syllable.

I have no tips as it was something I kind of picked up subconsciously living in a predominantly hispanic city. Also getting ridiculed by everyone for not pronouncing a hispanic surname correctly kind of helps.

In the year 2029 "R"s and the rolling of them will be ultimately dispensed with. Dont worry about it, its not worth it.

Me too. learning Italian requires R-rolling. It just came to me. Rs are definitely tough for some people. I know a person or two that simply cannot say their Rs. They replace them with Ws. Strange.
