Google to the rescue?
Quote:
The most recognized meaning of a red ribbon is HIV/AIDS awareness. However, this color also represents substance abuse and DARE, as well as MADD.
Nearly everyone knows that a yellow colored ribbon indicates support for the troops. But it can also represent suicide prevention and hope. A pale yellow ribbon represents awareness of the disease spina biffida.
Breast cancer is the most known reason people where pink ribbons, but this color also shows support and awareness of birth parents. It lets people know that the decision of birth parents to put their child up for adoption is respected.
A white ribbon is displayed for awareness of terrorism victims. Its connotative connection to innocence also makes it a choice for those who wish to raise awareness about peace and right to life causes.
Some of the lesser known, but still relatively popular ribbon colors, are as follows: lavender for general cancer awareness; green for organ and tissue donation, as well as missing children, the environment and leukemia; dark/navy blue for child abuse and domestic violence prevention, free speech, arthritis and water safety (drowning) and quality.
There are ribbons that have more than one color. The most popular multicolored ribbon is the red, white and blue variety that denotes patriotism and 9/11 remembrance. Pastel pink and blue ribbons represent awareness of infant loss and SIDS. A ribbon with a jigsaw of colors is autism awareness.

I never really understood the "Awareness" ribbon thing.
I dont' know, maybe the point is that people will be utterly confused, by your orange, and green ribbon, and come ask you about it and you can tell them that it is in support of such and such resarch, and that will help raise awareness of it, but how many of you have actually asked someone, what their random colour ribbon was for?

maybe a ribbon with pictures of ribbons on it should promote different ribbons and what they mean awareness.

MS also falls under the orange bracelet category. Although it really does look red.. at least to me.

Yellow ribbons are also placed on old oak trees to indicate that a guy getting out of prison is still wanted by his dame.

Damn, what if there are no oak trees outside the prison, I am currently incarcerated in......I mean, what if hypothetically, a prison that had no connection to me, had no oak trees, and some dude was getting out of jail?

Canadian Cancer Society. If you check their website you see the main colors are yellow and blue. I know it gets confusing when you see another form of cancer get it's own color, but I think you and I would both agree that breasts deserve special recognition.

In the States I thought that putting ribbon around a tree meant someone from your household was currently serving in the military.

See, this is the way it was explained to me. Back in the day, when you went a way for a stretch your gal would tie a yellow ribbon 'round the old oak tree if she still wanted you. Then, when you got out, you would cruise by on the bus or skulk around in her bushes and see if she left that yellow ribbon outside. If she did, you were in like Flint. If not, well screw her she wasn't that hot anyway.

Alternatively, if your gal's interest was still in question you could rent the apartment above her. If she knocked three times on the ceiling it was her way of telling you that she still wanted you. Twice on the pipe and the answer is no.
