Default car trouble

My car wont shift after it hits 50 km/hr. The Rpm's jump to about 4000 and wont go down. Am I looking at a big bill for a new tranny? If so, does anyone know a good place to get this type of work done. Car is a 94 Explorer with a ton of Km's on it. 340 000km is what I've racked up.

auto or manual?

if auto, try a tranny flush and fill first

if manual, is there a chance the clutch is slipping?

Explorers have a bad reputation in regards to their tranny. I used to own and the thing was a piece of crap.

Yeah try to change fluids. Check to see that its not really low on fluid. Some autos have a sort of safe mode when there's a problem.

On the other hand, 340,000 kms......

My bet is fluid is low, or tranny needs some work.

I had a similar problem with my first car and thought the transmission would need to be replaced. I had a Dodge and took it to a dealership. After putting it on their computers and test driving they found it only had to have the speedometer sensor replaced.

I went to Blaskin and Lane originally and they told me the same thing about doing a tranny flush. I called my mechanic from back home in Nova Scotia and he said it wouldn't do it any good. So if I were you I would have the sensor checked first before doing the flush. Might not be the problem but good to check it first, could save you huge money like it did myself.

Had the same thing on a Windstar and it was just a sensor. The crappy part was driving back from Edmonton going 50km/h the whole way.

Tranny. And here's a tip: if it is 4x4 and the tranny blows on you, put it in 4 low and use 4th gear. It's a straight shaft from there. You're never stranded in a 4x4. You'll be able to go at least 50kph in 4low. Just don't try to shift.

The best part was trying to cross the on ramps and off ramps. Since we were hanging out in the shoulder most of the way we had to wait til there was no traffic at all so that we could make it across the highway exits and entrances so we didn't get creamed. Good thing the #2 is pretty quiet on a Sunday afternoon

I heard that a Tranny flush is a bad idea? I had a vehicle in for some transmission work (at a very reputable transmission shop) and the mechanic told me that sometimes a flush causes particulate and such to become dislodged and end up ruining things.

Changing the fluids was good, but a flush was bad. I'm not even close to a mechanic, so I just take their advice! Anyone know anything about this, or have anything to verify this kind of thing?

If you had been flushing all along on the recommended schedule, you are good. If you haven't been, exactly what you said. Often they start slipping right after. Better to change the fluid and leave them alone.

okay, now a question from me regarding what I think is my tranny...I've got a five speed 94 Mazda B4000 with just over 250k on it. I'll be driving down the road at 100-120 just fine when all of a sudden, bang, the truck will just start to slow down...sometime's it'll pick up again at 90, other times it'll take me to 60 to get going again. I have to downshift, upshift, sometimes a number of times before it'll start goinng again. And it'll lug like I shifted to early sometimes as well, but I know I'm not. oh, and the gas pedal can be really touchy. If I push 'er a little too much, the same thing will happen....so is it the clutch/tranny, oxy-sensors, injectors...what?

I have to think about this, but off the top of my head, I'll guess it is sensor or exhaust related. The tranny is consistant when malfunctioning. You wont be cruising at a steady speed an suddenly lose power. Especially in a manual. The clutch is a little less consistant, but still, you'd experience similar problems in all 5 gears.
The fact that the gas pedal sometimes aggrivates the problem makes me start to lean toward a fuel pump issue or perhaps a fuel filter.
I'll ponder this a little and post again later.

I know it's not the fuel filter, I replaced that. I've actually been having trouble with it for a fair bit now. Not regularly enough to make it worth me getting it looked at until just recently...perhaps it's had something to do with the cold weather we're having. But even if I let the truck warm up for a while, it'll still do it. The most aggravating part about it is the fact that it will run fine some days, and then others just run like complete and utter crap.

Had a similar sounding problem. A new fuel pump sorted it out.

Hmm since we are talking trannys, I have a 95 GMC 1/2ton 4x4. Lately when i have been driving I get up to around 80 and it felt like the tranny is slipping, (the truck would slow down for about 1 second then kick back in giving you a little jerk.) It did it a couple times and I checked the tranny fluid and it was full and didnt smell burnt.

So I was waiting for it to do it again and I noticed that the RPMs are going DOWN when this happens. If the tranny were slipping then the RPM should climb when this happens right?

SO now i am thinking fuel filter (hopefully) or pump. Sound right?
