Default Do you believe in MIRACLES...

I have to share this story with you all..

I got home from work today and was in the middle of my usual routine after work.. (shower, shave watch TV) when my sister came over for dinner. She started to notice that my cat was spewing white crap from his anus. It wasn't poo or anything that i have ever seen before. He was licking himself and wasn't stopping at all. I decided to take him to the vet, who after 3 hours of waiting finally told me that " Ziggy (my cat) has a urinary tract disorder and his kidney's were going to fail. I was shocked !!! I asked him what the procedure was going to be to save him, they told me that he would need to be flushed completely, the only problem was it would cost me 1400 dollars. I looked at my cat, crying in the corner and seeing how much pain he was already in.

Therefore i decided that i would put Ziggy down. A hard decision to say the least, I was pretty shook up, so i said my goodbye's and couldn't bear to watch them euthenize (sp<) my poor cat. I went home and was pretty damn upset over this.

I started to watch TV when i casually look down on my phone and realize that i had one missed call, It turns out it's from the Vet who has told me that he was squeezing Ziggy and he started to pee all over the vet. Ziggy went to the bathroom 3 more times in less than 20 minutes, so the vet told me to come pick him up. They gave him some fluid shots to clean out any blockage that he might have had..

I went back to the vet and just when i thought i had lost my cat he was right there looking up at me.. I got pretty choked up at that point. I was fully prepared to lose him didn't even shed a tear before. Now as i type this i can look to my left and see my old buddy sleeping..

It's a beautiful sight to see.

Wow... nice story. I remember when our cat passed away after a a half-year battle with poor kidneys, it was a difficult time, but not one that we hadn't kind expected to happen anytime soon, she was quite old already. To suddenly hear that your cat was so ill that the best choice is euthanasia must've hit you like a wall. What a cocktail of mixed emotions you must have had at the moment you got the call.

I'm happy to hear you and your pal are back together, personally I absolutely adore cats, they are truly man's best friend.

You know it was an evil cat setup right, your cat was just waiting for the opportunity to pee all over a vet.

Awesome. I just spit coffee all over my self!

Glad to hear your cat is alright! I'm terrified mine will end up with the same condition. I have a male cat who refuses to eat any sort of wet food short of straight tuna. The vet consistently casts doom and gloom over that.

Glad to hear your situation worked out. It's terrible to lose a pet, especially so suddenly. Hope you have plenty more years with your friend.

As a cat lover and owner, I am happy it worked out for you, I don't know what I would do if my cat(Splash) passed away or got sick all of a sudden.

Any pictures??

Here is one to my cat

My vet always told me to only feed my cats dry food. Is there something I'm missing here?

There are some excellent dry foods out there that are preventive against urinary blocking. Hills Prescription Diet C/D and MediCal Preventive are very good, and vet recommended.

I've actually used those ones. He refused to eat it for 2 days straight. The only food he will touch (and won't puke up immediately afterward) is Nature's Best with Tuna and Oceanfish.

Cat's are fun.

This sounds a little too much like a car mechanic... Are you sure he wasn't just trying to rip you off by playing a game of chicken with you?

In any case, I am glad your cat is OK.

Vet's usually suggest as much wet food content to your cat's diet as possible. In Europe, they feed almost exclusively wet food and this is thought to be the reason their cats have way less urinary tract problems.

Glad to hear your cat is doing okay.

Regarding which is better, wet vs dry cat food, I've been told by vets that dry is generally better, but some wet cat foods are okay too. What you need to look for is whether the food is low in ash or not ... you want as low as possible. I've had two cats with this problem, both male. It's called Feline Urinary Syndrome and is more problematic with male cats because of the shape of their urinary tubes. Basically, it's like gall stones for cats. Uric crystals build up in the urinary tubes and block them, preventing the cat from being able to whiz. High ash content in the cat's food is the main cause of the uric crystal buildup, and the worst brands are the big name supermarket brands. It really pays to buy high end, low ash cat food from a vet or pet shop. Go to Petland or someplace like that and tell them what you're looking for ... they should be able to offer a few choices.

With your cat, it sounds like he was able to pass the crystals on his own without being flushed by the vet. I suspect the problem could and probably will reoccur if you don't get him on some low ash food though.

As for the $1400 vet charge, that sounds a bit high. It's been over 10 years since I had a cat with this problem, but at that time the flush job cost around $400. There was a surgical option as well, which cost over $1000, so maybe that's what the vet was proposing.

That's awesome! Great to hear things like that. As for this thread, I'm amazed no LOLCat's have shown up.

The cat at my parent's place pees everywhere. Even though I want to hate it, it looks too much like puss in boots for me to stay angry more than a minute.

this was my first thought as well. I wonder if vets try stuff like that? Claim your animal requires expensive life-saving treatment immediately hoping you wont think twice about paying. then when you decide not to, the animal "miraculously" recovers.

not meaning to belittle the story above. I'm glad you got your cat back.

My cat is diabetic, my mom took her in to the vet because my cat wasn't looking right, and she got told she was diabetic and only has a year left. My cat then moved in with me and now 3 almost 4 years later she is still the same cat, just with a limp and not as good eyes.
