Default Rangers - Ducks pull the trigger and make a deal

Well when breaks in the schedule happen ..... typically the first thing that happens is the Rangers make a trade..... Rangers have a few players in the last year of their contracts and the following question had to be asked;

Will the Rangers win the cup, organzation at this point believes it will be a challenge to make the playoffs and the cup is a few years down the road... with that in mind the following deal was made

To Ducks

Ray Whitney

To Rangers

Bobby Ryan
Manny Malhotra
2nd - 2008

This was a very difficult trade as Whitney is a local favorite....however the Rangers were worried on the amount of dollars it would take to sign him to a new contract.......

Ducks obviously get the best player in the deal. Rangers get a solid prospect in Ryan as well as a decent depth player in Malhotra and a pick. Seems like Ducks are making a push for this year while the Rangers are looking to build for the future. In that sense this deal makes sense both ways. For now I like it for Anaheim.

Is it really a push when you're in 26th place?

When you got Nieds on your team you have to do something to try and make any sort of push possible.

Ducks are glad to get someone up front that can play with Gagne, Whitney is a UFA but we will try our best to resign him at the years end. Expect another announcement to be made later today with the Ducks in the process of making a second deal.

Whitney would have been a Nord had it not been for an injury to Koivu (P4).

Whitney is an interesting case. He's still a really productive NHL player but on July 1st he's going to be 36 years old and needing a 3 year one way deal for about 8 million and a one way deal. Thats a big chunk of money.

So I'd say Bobby Ryan, Malhotra and a second is a good return for him. But he is a guy who should put up points in the SIM.
