Default Devils And Ducks Swap Goalies

I was going to post this big "in GM style" post about this trade but I am not sure I did well here. I think it might be heavily debated here. I think I may have made a real bonehead move here!

To New Jersey:

G Josh Harding
RW Brian Willsie

To Anaheim:

G Jose Theodore
RW Corey Perry
$4 million in cap space

Here's my justification, Perry and Stastny were both on the last year of a contract and were going to get big raises; Theodore is not really showing any solid signs of turning things around, so his contract is going to be even worse than it was. I needed the flexibility here and I think it is reasonable to assume that Harding and Theo will be rated the same next season. I don't know guys, seriously. I think I may have gotten bent over here. We'll see! Harding can be a starting goalie, however.

If Ed Belfour retires, we are in for another long season ...

I like the deal for Anaheim for this year easily. However, Harding will be a solid goalie in the future and long term I might like it for NJ then depending on how good Harding/Perry get. Gotta give the advantage to Anaheim in this deal.

Ducks are really happy to add a guy like Perry to the offense. He is a great young player and should help us for years to come. Going back we had to give up future franchise star Josh Harding who will be a starter in this league, there is no doubt in my mind. I expect him to be 75OV next year, it was a hit to lose him but to get a good young forward I had to give up a good young goalie.

Theodore will step in to act as a solid backup for Luongo. While he will help this year, his near 8 million dollar contract will put me in a tough place next year, especially if he struggles this year in the NHL.

Harding is good, so I don't mind the Harding-Perry part

question is whether Theodore holds his value or not. he somehow seems to be turning his NHL life around (at least against the Flames). and sometimes in the SIM players hold value well past their best before date

If Theodore figures things out - and manages to hold his rating - I look like a real idiot in this trade. Honestly, I'm not sure that I don't already look that way.

Looks like the Ducks finally found a taker for Harding!

I like this deal for Anaheim though.

Dido the above, Like I mentioned yesterday in a good long debate, I don't see Harding being a starter in the NHL for several more years. I'll have to wait and see if I'm wrong.

Yeah, it's not so much about Harding's ability either... but more about him having one of the better goalies in the entire NHL in front of him on the depth chart. Barring an extended period that sees Backstrom miss a significant number of games, Harding won't get enough games in to realize his potential.

I agree with the Debbies assesment that the Debbies didn't do so well here. Harding is one of the best young goalies out there but it's tough to see him realizing that potential in the sim as soon as the Devils will need him to. As someone mentioned he's stuck behind Backstrom in Minny. Sure, sooner or later Backstrom might suffer a big injury or more likely, his contract will be up so the small market trades him away and Harding gets his chance. But, those events aren't too likely to happen in the next 2 NHL season or so. Which means Harding has at least that long before he plays enough to get an 80+ rating in the sim.

In the meantime, Theodore is serviceable and Perry can really contribute and has potential himself.

On the plus side for the Devils- first, at least they do have Belfour for this season. Losing Theodore for Harding doesn't hurt them much right now. But they're going to have to find a starter for next season. Second, Harding will have a ton of value. The Devils might be able to trade him after this season for a starter anyway.
