Smoking in Vehicles Question?
First of all I see quite often people smoking away in a vehicle while there kids are in it sometimes even babies, from time to time the windows are even rolled up, but that's not my questions. Do vehicles nowadays not come with ashtrays anymore? It's a serious question, cause I have a 2004 Ford (SUV) and it doesn't have an ashtray....so i'm thinking for safety reasons they don't prefer cigarretes to be put out in a vehicle??? But it's a pet peeve of mine when people flick there cancer sticks on the roads, is that littering or not? Just wondering....

Dude got pulled over on COPS tonight because he flicked his cigarette out the window.
I agree with you, I hate it when people do that.

Yeah it's littering. Was sitting at the lights earlier today and some dude in a pickup opened his driver door and dumped his ash tray of butts on the road. He didn't notice the ghost car behind him. Lights go on and the rest is history

Thanks for the quick response...very interesting. The guy dumping his ashtrays, come on man that is just idiotic. If I was the cop I would make him pick them all up....with his teeth! Glad to hear they caught him.

I actually have a good story on this.
I was on my way home from wasting my life away on the beaches of lake okanagan a few years ago when BC had those devastating brush fires. I was out with family and friends and we were on our way home.
The highway was temporarily closed at the time because of the fires and we were just sitting there waiting for them to open it up so we could continue going home. While waiting on the highway my dad's friend was in his van with his family ahead of us and right in front of him was a guy in his truck smoking.
This dude was smoking away, on the highway that is closed because of forest fires, i 30+ degree heat and he is flicking his cigs into the ditch!
Our friend (who is the nicest guy you will ever meet, but none the less a very large, very intimidating guy) gets out of his van, and knocks on buddy's window.
Buddy: What?
Friend: What the hell do you think you're doing?
Buddy: Smokin' man, whats your deal?
Friend: My deal is that we're sitting on the side of the road because of brush fires and a ###### like you is stupid enough to flick a cigarette into bushes that havent seen rain in months while its 30 degrees outside. Its because of idiots like you that we have this problem.
He proceeds to haul this guy out of his seat (not wearing a seatbelt too) and throws him into the ditch and tells him to find his cigarette butt and put it out.
The morale of this story? Some people have zero consideration for anything around them, up to and including their own kids.

This is something I simply can not fathom. If you have decided to be a smoker, so be it, that is your personal preference and decision, but to expose your child to that smoke, especially in any confined space like a vehicle, well to me that is like child abuse. How can people do that to their children?

Hey redforever, you had to see it to believe it....true story, couple of months back I was on the ramp at the lights off of 16th avenue exiting onto to South Bound deerfoot, I look to my left I see this couple in a van both smoking she's driving, he's the passenger, no big deal right? She jumps the gun a little cause she thought the light was going to turn green so she moves up I look again as her van had slipped up a little past me only to see a young girl maybe about 3 and a baby in the child seat that still faces backwards sitting in the back, the van never had tinted windows so I could clearly see in it. I just about had to pull over, being a father myself, at how sad I found that whole scenario too be.

You know what, I was out on Highway 1 coming from Old Banff Coach Road towards Stoney Trail, and there was this rav 4 or something in front of me. He made an erratic move to the left lane, and all of a sudden there was a large spark on the road. My immediate reaction was to swerve (going 110) into the other lane.
turns out the ###### was just passing the guy in front and flicking his smoke out at the same time, but at night... and with him looking like he was dodging something on the road... I seriously thought something was about to smoke my car... bah..
I can see how it can, on a rare occasion (besides littering), be a problem.

The ashtrays that come on new cars are the ones that fit in the drink holders.

I'm a smoker, but I'd never dream of smoking around the kids. I smoke at work, and late at night when they're already in bed, but I wouldn't be surprised if my 3 year old didn't know I smoked.
Smoking in a car with kids is just ######ed.

if thats not your question, then why add that on...seems like you just dont like smokers...i dont smoke but in the big context of things...someone flicking a cigarette out the window is much less of an irritant than someone speaking on their cellphone or applying makeup while driving.

I'd like to comment on this.
As an ex-smoker (for almost 2 years now) I never thought it was bad in a car at all when I smoked. I had my window cracked etc.. no big whoop right?
But when a few months ago, a co-worker was driving his van from one site to another, and I caught a ride back to my car, he lit a smoke...
My passenger window wouldn't open because it didn't work ( so similar to a kid not being able to open a window I guess) and it was suffocating. I couldn't breathe, it was a brutal experience. Something as a smoker I never experienced because I was used to the smoke.
I am still not (or ever will be) a stop smoking advocate as I believe everyone has their own right to smoke or not, but I can't imagine (actually, now I can) what its like for kids to be stuck in a car full of smoke and no way to get fresh air.
Good on you for not doing this, as too many parents do.

I have a 2007 Rav4 and it doesn't have a lighter or ashtray, but both are available as a special add-on package. As said, the ashtray fits in one of the cup-holders. Without the lighter, it just has an extra 12V power port.
I could see the problem being that you can go to Canadian Tire and buy a cigarette lighter that can plug into the 12V jack, but you won't have an ashtray, although, in my experience, very few smoking drivers even use the ashtray if it is available.

Good, and I hope that when you are at home and they are in bed and you are smoking, you are doing so on your deck outside???

I could never stand going to my Grandpa's house, because he smoked inside. Honestly, I can't handle a smokey house, which may be odd, since I'm a smoker. But no, it would be pretty silly to say that I don't smoke in the car with the kids, however I do smoke in the house that they live in most of their day.

??? Now haven't you become your Grandpa? Choosing to smoke was your own personal decision, nobody can fault you for that, I am sure you know the health consequences only too well. I have heard quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do, so if you are not there yet, or you have not chosen to go there yet, so be it. But smoking outside, where it will not expose your children and family to second hand smoke, now that is something you are in total control of as well. Surely that is something that would be easy for you to do for your family?

I'm sure most people feel disdain when they see losers littering fast food containers, napkins or whatever. That's why I don't see many flagrant litters, IMO.
I don't get the people that think that it's acceptable to throw their butts out the window. Do they magically bio-degrade? or maybe, they help 'filter' the river (that they end up in)of harmful contaminates?
I'm by no means a tree-hugger, but, come on. Littering is littering no matter how small the trash.
As a life-long Calgarian, I've always been impressed with Calgary's cleanliness, compared to most places I've traveled. I think that 'civic spirit' has something to do with this. Do these smokers hate a clean town? Do they prefer to have a less odious car scent, regardless of their actions?
/rant/
ps yes, I'm an ex-smoker, but throwin' butts has always pissed me off.
