Default Blocked Websites at Work

My work recently blocked Facebook on my computer, and my computer alone. I had pretty much stopped using it, but as I am taking this personally my initial reaction is to find away around it and win this battle of pettiness. Anyone know how?

I don't know how to get around things being blocked being essentially a technical idiot (but not an idiot savant, sadly) - just wanted to commiserate on the blocking of your websites....my employer recently just blocked my ability to access my Facebook inbox which is soooo irritating!

It's quite easy in fact. I lived in China for four years and had no trouble getting around their attempts to close down sites. There is a long list of proxies you can use and new ones added all the time as the old ones are shut down.

Two words for you: facebook mobile. Free on Telus' data packages.

This came up a couple of weeks ago, and the consencus is that any attempt to circumvent from work can also be tracked; and then you also graduate from "wasting company time" to "really going out of your way to wanting to waste company time."

Best way is get a laptop and a KVM, and use some foolish person's unsecured wireless connection if you need in that bad.

What is the most effective way to block Facebook and Myspace?

I requested this from our IT guy a long time ago, but he hasn't done it yet. The students in our class spend way too much time on those sites and not enough on job searching and resume writing.

Many schools have gone to a monitoring software instead or in conjunction with a blocker. LANSCHOOL is an example.

You might want to look into a hardware firewall which gives you other added security benefits as well.

just curious. what are the capabilities of big brother watching over us? Is the IT dept (theoretically) capable of knowing ever webpage we view, or every e-mail we send?

Oh yeah, they see everything. I also catch them digging through my garbage from time to time.

Just to save anybody else who has it blocked by Websense at their work- that link was still blocked for me.

Best way around firewalls to use an SSH tunnel to a computer outside. But don't try it until you know how to set it up yourself.
