Google Releases their "gPhone"
Not really a phone per say, but instead, a phone OS with an open development platform for all phone companies to use.
Based on this companies software: http://www.android.com which Google bought at some point.

They're hoping to make a better phone, ultimately. (And sell a ton of ads and services, of course, along the way.)
•Android, an open system for handset dev, is the first joint project and core product of the alliance.
•There are 34 members of the group, including NVIDIA, Intel, Texas Instruments, Synaptics (haptics!), Marvell, Qualcomm (chips), Motorola, Samsung, TMO, Sprint, LG, HTC, KDDI and DOCOMO from Japan and China Mobile Comm. Corp.

And here's the bottom line from the same article.
"Indeed, when pressed, Mr. Rubin said that a wireless carrier would be free to make a phone that ran Android that locked out any application it didn’t approve of."
So yes it is open but wireless carriers will lock it down and once again, force us to pay them to put content we have already purchased onto hardware we already own.
