I was just searching for a file converter too. I've seen a thread here about it before but I can't find it so I'll ask the question here. Can anybody tell me what I need to convert an AVI file to a DVD (or something I can burn on to a DVD)?

Do you have a video ipod by any chance? Because you can just rip your DVD to the iPod, that is what I have done. In fact, I was "listening" to one of my movies while a work last night.
If not, I am not sure what you can do. I would be interested in a solution as well.

to answer one of the questions avi to dvd, you can use nero vision express, its not bad, it gets the job done, though it does slow down your computer while it converts the avi file to the proper DVD format to burn,

Doom9 is a great site for this sort of information. Click this link to go to the guides section. There's a guide there for avi to dvd and dvi to mp4, which I think answers both questions above.

DVDFab Platinum is great for ripping DVDs and converting video files. I was watching Ratatouille on my Ipod touch in no time!
It doesn't appear to be able to just rip audio, however. I'm not certain though.
I can tell you that it works almost flawlessly for video, and quick too.
