Did you read the whole article? I'm as optimistic as the next guy but understand little more medical science than the next guy. Until someone can tell me that the world experts on the matter know less than our in house disease expert kipperfan then I'd be less inclined to be so glib about it.

Do you think the drug companies and medical community are looking for more funding or do these people get some kind of perverse pleasure out of scaring the crud out of the general populace?

didn't read the article  but i have read many times that globally, flu kills more people than aids by a long shot. Not even close.
Flu is actually quite deadly, so don't lick doorknobs in public places.

yeah it is............................if you live in africa, have no immunizations, an immune system that cant fight off a common cold, and improper shelter during cold and wet seasons, it is a killer.

Show me the death toll in Canada for the flu?

"Bad colds have always been potentially deadly. Every year, about 100 people, mostly elderly, die of bad colds in Canada due to their already poor immune systems. Upwards of 7,000 die of pneumonia and influenza. This isn’t to minimize the public health threat posed by SARS; rather, it is to show that cold-like viruses have always been potentially fatal. This said, the case-fatality rate of influenza is very low, less than 0.1%; the SARS case-fatality rate of 4-5% is far more concerning."

Could only find this so far from CANSTATS. 7000/year but pneumonia is lumped in.

They don't have a death toll, but the numbers can be as high as 1,500 according to Health Canada, but those are low, as if someone who is allready ill gets the flu, lets say they have cancer, they don't count those as deaths caused by the flu, or at least that is what I have been told.

Pandemics are no laughing matter....

The influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 killed more people than World War I, at somewhere between 20 and 40 million people. It has been cited as the most devastating epidemic in recorded world history. More people died of influenza in a single year than in four-years of the Black Death Bubonic Plague from 1347 to 1351.

It was known as "Spanish Flu" or "La Grippe" the influenza of 1918-1919 was a global disaster, and infected 28% of Americans ( and killed over 600,000 of them ).

The 1919 Stanley Cup was cancelled due to the death of Joe Hall from the Montreal Canadiens. It was part of the flu epidemic. And I would start getting flu shots as people in the health industry are warning of a nasty one in the next decade or so.

And it's worth noting that scientists believe that it originated somewhere on a farm in Kansas. We have this perception that influenzas start only in poor or overpopulated regions of the world (southeast asia, particularly). But generally any region that has a combination of fowl, pigs, and humans can easily produce new and deadly flu viruses.
