nvu is pretty good.
There is also Eclipse.. but that is more of programming Integrated development environment. Mind you, if you are interested in learning a web programming language alone with an HTML editor.. it would be a good choice.

Probably the best choice would be Aptana (based on Eclipse). But it provides plugins for Ruby on Rials, PHP and probably a few more.

As well as gives you a powerful html editor.

Notepad? That's like trying to build the Saddledome with a toothpick.

The free version of Visual Studio Web 2005 is actually quite good as an editor if you're seeking features.

Otherwise, my two favorite text editors (outside of Vim) are:

Notepad++
PSPad

When there are amazing free text editors out there like PSPad, you're only a fool if you insist on using Notepad.

I also recommend Notepad++.

Uses tabs when there are multiple files open, and has great syntactical highlighting.

I've used Arachnophilia for a long time. I prefer the no longer supported non-Java Windows-only version.

I used Arachnophilia for years ... hard to find now.

Anyone have a comment on Kompozer? Tried it last night ... not bad, need to get used to it. Saw it recommended on another board

I used Araneae for a bit, and loved it. It's free for non-commercial use.

I've used Nvu and Visual Studio Web Express when I'm away from Dreamweaver. I actually preferred Visual Studio.
