Default Two deals in two days for the Ducks

Well, the most active GM the past few weeks is thinking about taking a break after the last two days. The Ducks have made 2 more deals which they think help their team both in the short term and long term (when you consider both deals together). GM Ravi states, "We had been making some moves to get guys that other teams liked and finally we were able to parlay them and get the personnel that we want on this team going forward."

The first deal was with the Flyers and it breaks down likes this:

To Ducks:
Josh Harding
Gilbert Brule
David Hale
2009 3rd R. pick

To Flyers:
Keith Ballard
JP Vigier
2008 4th Rd. Pick
$0.8 for the 07/08 season

The Ducks are ecstatic to get a goalie like Harding in their system. We feel like he will be an impact goalie in this league very soon. The young tandem of Kari and Harding shows a bright future for the Ducks as those two will ultimately battle it out for the #1 job.

The second deal was with the Panthers and involves the acquisition of a veteran D man who is currently injured but will make a large impact on his return.

To Ducks:
Scott Hannan
Ryan Malone
Steve Montador
2008 WIN 2nd Rd pick
$3 million for 07/08 season

To Panthers:
Nick Boynton
Nick Foligno
2008 TOR 1st Rd pick
2009 OTT 1st Rd pick

We needed a LW badly and are glad to get Malone who is signed on for a couple more years. Hannan and Boynton were potential UFA swaps but Hannan will clearly demand a large salary so we have to make sure we can take it on next year.

All in all, a great 2 days for the Ducks. We feel the addition of harding and brule helps us greatly for the future and the addition of malone and hannan helps us compete for a playoff spot.

Its a couple of interesting deals. I like Hannan and Malone and those are good additions. I personally don't think a lot of Brule, but that doesn't mean anything!

The two firsts in the FLA deal have to hurt though, after you were seeking these in our prior talks!

The Flyers acquired defenseman Keith Ballard and winger J.P. Vigier today from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Going the other way are prospects Josh Harding, Gilbert Brule and defenseman David Hale. There were also some cash and picks involved.

GM moon talked about the new players:

“Keith is a talented, young defenseman that should fit in perfectly on our team. He not only will be a fixture for the future but a key piece to helping us win this year as well. J.P. will provide some steadiness on our fourth line. He isn’t going to lead the team in scoring, but he isn’t going to put us down a goal too often either.”

Giving up two big assets in Brule and Harding was not easy for GM moon:

“Any time you get to add a guy of Keith’s talent and age you are going to have to give up some talented players. We are definitely giving up a lot of potential in losing Gilbert and Josh. However, Keith joins an already impressive group of young defensemen and we feel comfortable with our guys for the future.”

Ya losing Hannan hurt (and he is hurt) but from a rating prospective we do not lose alot between Hannan and Boynton.

We have alot of UFA coming up and there is no way we will be able to keep them all. Boynton will be cheaper to resign than Hannan.

Losing Malone leaves us a hole on the LW but two firsts should help us close that with hopefully a better player.

We hope Nick Foligno will continue to improve and hopefully qualify for a mid season re-rate.
