Default Calgary's Santa Claus Parade CXLed

Just caught the segment on Global News at 6pm.

With construction on the parade route, opposition to the alternate, and lack of volunteers and employees, the Downtown Association which runs the parade has cancelled it for this year. Instead there will be a party at Olympic Plaza. I dont have kids myself but I can imagine this will make a lot of kids sad.

I thought the parade had become very commercial.

A party at Olympic Plaza will help the kids forget.

Whatever happened to the New Years Parties in Olympic Plaza? I was there for 2000 and I'm not sure they've had once since.

Ha, the cynic in me half-expected to come in here and learn the parade was cancelled for some PC reason of not wanting to offend other religions.

I thought Calgary was an extremely volunteer-heavy city. What happened?

People don't volunteer because of construction?

No, the road got closed. An alternate route got proposed, that also got shot down. Another route was proposed, but that would require a lot more work, and they were already short on volunteers vs. previous years. So they decided a party would be easier and require less man power.

Taken from www.thecalgaryfoundation.org:

"Rate of volunteeRisM c
In 2004, 44.6% of Calgarians aged 15 and older
volunteered their time compared to 46% in 2000.
This rate was also slightly below the provincial rate
of 47.7% and the national volunteer rate of 45.3%."

From the city of calgary website:
http://content.calgary.ca/CCA/City+H...er+Capital.htm

"Volunteer Calgary announced today that Calgary is Canada's volunteer capital, with more than double the national volunteer rate of 27 per cent. According to an Ipsos-Reid survey conducted on behalf of Volunteer Calgary, more than 71 per cent of Calgarians volunteered their time during the past 12 months to make our community a better place."

Pretty big difference in those stats...

Dunno about the rest of their site but the Calgary vital signs report aside from stating the obvious on alot of issues was junk for the most part.

Lived here all my life, worked downtown for the past 5 years, and I didn't even know we HAD a Santa Claus parade.

No loss in my books!

Of course the media is finding a way to spin this into another "Calgary is becoming a horrible place to live" story. Why do they hate their own city?

Not with the Young Canadians participating they won't. The kids may very well have a very jaded view of Santa for years to come...

I didn't even know we had a Santa Claus parade, and I'm a born and raised Calgarian of 25 years. I always just figured it was an Amer'can thing.
