Default Biggest choke in the history of professional sports

With the NY Mets blowing a tire in the month of September and missing the playoffs, it got me to thinking about the other chokes in professinal sports.

Of course mine is the NY Yankees blowing a 3-0 games lead in the ALCS to their dreaded rivals the Red Sox in 04. They had a couple of chances to oust the Red Sox but failed both times to do it. The rest history is the Red Sox went on to win the next 4 games and eventually win the World Series.

So, what is your favourite choke?

What was the Mets lead on Sept 1st? I don't follow at all anymore.

I'm thinking there have been some collossal golf chokes. Lefty a couple of years ago (can't remember which major),.....Greg Norman on a couple of occasions. I'm sure someone else has the details.

this isn't blowing a huge lead or anything but the 76 grey cup. gabriel wide open in the end zone. everybody in the building knew he was getting the ball and the riders still left him completely wide open. and he was injured so he was hobling around and we still couldn't cover him. CHOKE! (BTW i wasn't born until 85 so luckily ive only seen this after the fact)

as far as comebacks/chokes id say that houston vs buffalo in an NFL playoff game where houston was up 35-3 and the bills won in OT 41-38.

Good call.

Frank Reich was the greatest QB in NFL history on that day.

Yankees/Red Sox was my favorite as I absolutely detest the Yankees. However being down 7.5 games or so with 14 games left and passing the Mets is huge.

Golf has had some huge ones during majors. Van de Velde had one major choke as did Norman.

Denver (8) beat Seattle (1) in the 1994 NBA playoffs which made it the 1st time in history that a 8th seed beat a 1st seed in that format. Seattle won a franchise 63 games (63-19) during that season while Denver snuck in at 42-40 I believe. Mutombo holding the ball at the end is still in my mind.

Some others:

- USA beating the Soviets in the Miracle on Ice game.

- Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson in 1990 in the heavyweight championship match

- Gardner beat Karelin in the 2000 Olympics in the greco roman wrestling event (Karelin I think never lost prior to that)

- NCAA basketball has had some huge ones as well. Valparaiso that one year, George Mason a few years ago.

The Mets collapse is one for the ages. A 7 game lead on September 12th. The Phillies closed the gap with a 13-4 run. The Mets went 5-12.

The Red Sox have been involved in 3 big collapses that I've seen (two mentioned above). The 1978 Red Sox had a 14 game lead in July, only to lose a 1 game playoff (Bucky F***ing Dent).

The 2004 ALCS exorcised a lot of demons.

I remember watching the Bills come back to beat the Oilers. That was the first game that came to mind after reading the thread title.

Some other chokes....

The Miracle on Manchester: The heavily favoured Oilers losing to Marcel Dionne and the Kings in the 82 Smythe Division semifinals.

Mitch Williams - The wild thing: A 43 game closer for the Phillies in 93 couldn't get it done in the 03 World Series against the Jays.

Chris Webber,s gaff in the closing seconds of the 93 NCAA Final. Calling for a timeout with 20 seconds left, forgetting the team had already used up their timeouts.

World Cup 1998 in France.

Brazil waltzes to the finals burning up everything in their path and then chokes something fierce in the final to lose 3-0 to France. FRANCE!

I was devastated...

I'll never forgive the French for that....its a grudge I'll carry until the day I die...

This Mets choke was epic, just epic.

I hope the Phils go a long way now.

How about Jean Van de Velde in the 1999 Britsh Open.

Three strokes up going to the 18th hole, all he needs is a double bogey on the par-4 hole to win the Open. Ends up putting one shot in the bleachers, another one in the water, and another in the bunker before finally putting in a triple-bogey to force a playoff with Justin Leonard and Paul Lawrie, which Van de Velde loses. Ouch!

* This is not my favourite choke* But the Flames Game 7 of the 2005-2006 season. Not the biggest choke, but still leaves me with a bitter taste.

I really don't think that falls under the definition of a choke.

Blowing a 5-0 lead is a choke, blowing a 7 1/2 game lead this late in the year is a choke...

New York blowing that 3-0 lead is the one that sticks out to me. Just in the fashion that they won each game of that series especially game 3, just blowing out the Red Sox in the fashion they did.

The Stamps Tommy Jones at QB Vs The Renegades 3 or 4 years ago. All they had to was run out the clock and for some reason they went shotgun and Jones fumbled, and the renegades went on to win.

Tampa Bay Vs Indy Monday Night Football. If anyone can remember that game, Tampa was the hottest team in football and the defending superbowl champs, they never recovered after that.

As much as I hate to say it, Gonzaga UCLA 2 years ago.

Mavericks/Golden State this year

The Atlanta Braves and the last 2 decades excluding there one title
