I recently went looking for a part time job, and with virtually no effort at all I was able to land at job at a jewerly store. It's not that I needed the job, since a friend suggested I give it a try.
My interview wasn't much of an interview...the manager basically asked me when I could start. It was pretty hilarious.
There really is no excuse for anyone in Calgary not to be able to get a job. Sure, it may not be in your career field, but I think we can all agree that you can get a job here with virtually no effort.

When I opened this thread I thought someone would say that, either in the opening post or right after.
To be honest I don't give Cretien much credit for the run up of the economy during his last several years so I'm not about to say the conservatives created the low jobless rate.
Absolutely anyone who wants a job can have one, not many times in many societies does that happen.

lets be clear though ... there would no problem getting a service job for 8-13 / hour. however, if you are looking for a career position making "real" money, its not like those jobs are available on every street corner.
it still takes time to land the lucrative senior compensation jobs. took me 3.5 months.

Actually I think i'd find it EXTREMELY difficult to find a job for $8/hour...down the street chicken on the way is starting at $15/hour or $30k a year to fry chicken!

id be suprised if 8$ a hour jobs still exist in calgary, not counting jobs like servers which make a nice chunk of change on tips.

The low jobless rate is great, however it is still fairly difficult to break into a good job market. It took me a while to land a good job in Vancouver where dispite the jobless rate, competition is high.
Every retail and food store in the city is hiring, but if you want something more professional/corporate it's still tough. Luckily for me, I landed something I love and can progress with for years.

I'm surprised too. The kids I coach in soccer are around 14 or 15 and they work at Pizzarias and movie theatres and they're making $7.50.
I told them to quit and get a new job. I hate malls more than anyone has any real right to, but I guarantee you'd probably crack $10 if you even tried to get a mall job.
I got a part-time job while I'm in school this semester at a non-profit organization and I get $10 plus job-related benefits.

They should've been bumped up to $8 now, as of September 1, but I get where you're coming from.
I also understand the difficulties on the other side as to finding a career in a particular field related to a person's study. It took creating a position of my own to acutally come up with it.

Read my post again. I said it may not be based in your career field.

It's so easy to get a part-time job that pays more than $10, heck in Calgary I would refuse to settle for less.
