Default Buying a computer from Dell.

Hello Fellow Calgarypuckians.

I have a question regarding Dell. How many people here have ordered Dell computers? How many have been satisfied? How many unsatisfied? (by the computer Frank, settle down )

Story: I originally saved for a computer over the summer, even bought a new Monitor in preperation, but when the time came to pull the trigger I ended up spending it on a few fishing trips and some clothes instead. Well as luck would have it my comp has decided it is time to start crashing. Last night half way through a lab report my comp crashed, unacceptable.

Also any game that I play, be it UO or CS, runs choppy and the graphics are distorted. So I am guessing my vid card is on the way out, or is already there, directly related to the crashing. When I try to play a more graphics intense game, my comp lasts 5 minutes.

Anyway, I need to buy a new comp, but I do not have the funds. So I was looking at the Dell.ca finance option.

I built this system: cant get link to work see below post please.

That is pretty close to what I originally planned to build. I would finance over the winter and then pay it off within my first few pay checks come summer time, so that would be 7 months of interest, probably 8.

Question: Do you guys think this is a legit system at a good price? Buying from Dell, does that hamper my future upgrade options? Whatever hapened to Rudy on The Cosby Show?

Please, bless me with your wisdom.

Link doesn't work..

But in general I've had family and friends order Dell and they've been fine. Their support has helped them when necessary. For someone picky I wouldn't recommend it, but for a general use computer they're fine IMO.

Link to the details you priced out doesn't work.

I bought a dell latptop about 3 years ago, using the financing option. I am still paying for it though, but finally after 3 years.. I think I am actually starting to pay down the principle whoo-hoo!!!..If you have the opportunity to pay it off, do it.

Anyway, as far as upgrading goes.. just go to mem express (if in calgary), and pick up what ever you need/want and plug into the dell. The only difference between a Dell PC and one that you roll-your-own, is Dell builds it for you, and slaps on their logo.

With the laptop, I have purchased new RAM and a new HD, both from Memory Express, installed it myself, and have never had a problem.

Just my thoughts.

Well, I'm currently using a Dell laptop I bought 2 years ago and it's workin fine. Quality has been reliable and the one time I had a problem when the lcd went out after a year, it was fixed promptly and sent back to me after a week and a half after I called support. (But I had to spend 1 hour on the phone explaining to the Indian guy on the line what the problem was)

Thats the system. I am not overly picky, and to be quite honest I am getting sick of trying to figure out the "best" system to buy. I realise computers only last a few years so I am not to worried about it. Especially if I NEED the computer, it'd be different if I was just looking for an upgrade and not necessity I suppose. Thanks for the advise so far.

That system looks pretty decent especially if you need a PC right away. Loooking to upgrade myself soon and thats the type of system I'd be looking at since I dont want to go nuts trying to find something perfect or that will last forever.

This would be a better deal

Maybe you can bargain out the LCD. Although it would need a better vid card to do any real gaming.

Definately a good price, not sure about Acer PC's, but I like some of their laptops.

I am happy with my Dell, except it is the lowest end model and it is slightly lacking in the power I came to enjoy with my big 17" gaming laptop.

While an independent IT consultant, my clients have bought several hundred dell systems including hundreds of laptops. I also have used Dell (high-end XPS stuff) laptops for the last few years. Always reliable, always well supported, always well built. I like Dell. My XPS M1710 absolutely smokes for gaming.

I've had good luck with my basic Dell computer and LCD monitor. You shouldn't have any problems if you try to upgrade later. The only thing I've heard about Dell's is that you can't overclock them. With that processor and video card, there probably won't be much need anyways. The video card isn't top end for gaming but not bad and works great if you decide to also use it as Home Theater PC. Price and components look good to me.

had an Inspiron 5100 laptop for 3 years, spilled my drink on it and fried the motherboard 1 month before the extended warranty expired, they sent someone to my door to replace the motherboard. Runs perfectly after that. Bought an XPS M1210 a month later for $1200 tax in, sweet & light, ultraportable. Got it thru Airmilesshops.ca for extra AM too, no complaints whatsoever.

I would probably order my next one from dell
