Holy crap! Gotta buy this even though I already have HL2 (they let you give away HL2 and Ep One if you have them already).

TF2 looks cool. Portal looks amazing and I keep getting sidetracked trying to play through Ep. 1 so I really need to do that before Ep. 2.

I have been waiting for TFC2 for like 10 years. I'm pathetic.

So explain why Team Fortress is so great. I own and play HL and Counter Strike, HL2, HL2 Episode one, CS Source and DoD. What's the big deal with TM? Somehow I've never played it. I just thought it was along the lines of the HL multiplayer deathmatch, just with different characters...I'm out of the loop on this one.

A lot of different chars/classes. Engineers (set up turrets), Snipers, Machine gunners (who are painfully slow) and Soliders, with their rocket launchers. It was a fun game of capture the flag. Pretty primative compared to a lot of the other games out there right now, but it was tons of fun.
I personally loved laying about 5 remote gernades somewhere, and waiting for an unsuspecting player to run over them, and then I would detonate them.

You've never played the HL:Teamfortress Classic? It's the precursor to basically every class based game out there. Closest would probably be the Battlefield series in terms of gameplay. Basic play element of Capture the flag was feature on most maps, although there were a few hold and defend maps.
I'm hoping they retain the pyro's speed, as they were usually a good counterpoint to the scout's grabbing flags.

In addition to the other comments, I enjoy the speed of the game. With respawning, you don't sit there like in CS and wait for everyone to die, you just keep going. This makes capture the flag quite fun. You can try crazy tactics and not worry as much about dying. There's also crazy jumping with medics and soldiers. And I quite enjoyed finding optimal places to put the turrets and watch as coutless people come around the corner jumping around and dying

That said, the original Team Fortress has been completely ruined by years of updates and tweaks. What was one a fun game is nolonger fun. The classes are all tweaked to the point where it's frustrating to play.

forgive my ignorance... but about ten years ago, I played Quake world -and I think it was called fortress... it sounds the same capture the flag, and had all those classes except I think it had medics too... Are we talking the same game? Cause that was a blast... used to love sniping on that game...
Find a dark corner, time the lag, shoot were he will apear next and bloom his head exploded. good times.

I'll wait till the price drops. Don't want to pay for HL2 and HL2 Ep.1 all over again.

You can give away (ie sell) the HL2 and HL2 Ep.1 if you don't need them.

Team Fortress began on Quakeworld. by the time Quake 2 rolled out though Valve had purchased the rights to TF and remade it for Half-Life. an independant dev team made their own TF-like mod for Quake 2 called Weapons Factory which IMO was even better than the original (faster gameplay, offhand grapple, flying recon, etc). then Quake 3 came out and things got really confusing. WF had it's own sequel (Weapons Factory Arena) and a new mod called Quake 3 Fortress came out and mimiced the original TF as closely as it could
it's been quite awhile since i've played any of those though, and the TF junkie that i am i can't wait until TF2. got my copy preordered and preloaded waiting to go for monday

TF2 is more of a comedic looking game though, with purposefully cartoony looking characters.

Really well done. Almost professional. Really brings back memories not having touched TFC for over 5 years. Best thing is it's free and there is already over 1000+ people playing this mod. More people playing this than the TFC.

I gave in and ordered it with my Center Ice money... I'm not sure if I'm happy or sad right now.
